Is this Renzo Gracie quote accurate from your experience?

Ideally you want to combine book smarts & street smarts. I'll give the provocative comment a ....

provocative thumbs up

True but a man that can kill you with his bare hands matters at the end in a sad way.

And the atomic bomb can kill more people in a matter of seconds than Renzo can kill in his lifetime.

Almost anyone can understand the theories in any BJJ technique, only difference is they might not be as quick-thinking in a fight to apply it. It's no rocket science.

On the other hand, pretty sure little to no BJJ black belts can understand rocket science.

Profound!

I don't think Renzo is in the position to make that statement since he has never been in an Ivy league school. John Danaher is the only top BJJ coach who also attended an Ivy league school (Columbia University), so we need to hear his opinion on this subject.

Awesome shoop, by the way. Supreme quality!

I would just say within fighting in general, not specifically Jiu Jitsu. Every red blooded man would have to accept Nietzsche.

I'm talking about it doesn't matter how smart you are if you run into someone who can end you where you stand physically. It the harsh reality. Not everyone has time to reach or run to a weapon. The ultimate weapon of a man is his own abilities at the moment of danger.

It does, but they were just some random examples. Anything which gets a bunch of people from different walks of life with different life experiences in the same area regularly is going to lead to some exchange of knowledge socially.

I just don't see why some BJJ players feel the need to mark us out as some special elite club of people, when we're just regular dudes who happen to like cuddling in pyjamas.

It's not just bjj guys, it's any combat sport.

It's probably chess club and a group of dudes getting together to play dungeons and dragons twice a week too though, that's all I'm saying.

We're not special.

Mmm'kay..... so what has that got to do with the topic?

Fighters are special. They have been since our ancestors went to war with others. The top fighter lead the ways to victories in war. Especially before technology was invented and all you had was you body.

Fighters can play any other sport you listed . Those others can't play fighting, nor would most ever get in a fight.

That no matter how educated you are or intelligent you are, you can be taken out where you stand by a mindless thug or criminal where you stand if you can't physically defend yourself.

So being able to defend yourself is just as important as education or intelligence.

While bjj can humble you if you approach it with right mindset it can also attract certain types that like power and want to dominate and bjj will just enhance what’s already bad about them. Cameron Earle anyone ?

Anyone agreeing with Renzo is probably academically below average.

Imagine thinking inventing a new BJJ choke is equivalent to inventing new technology.

PhD Professor: I derived the mass-energy formula E=mc^2
BJJ Professor: Pfft that's nothing. I discovered you can break another man's elbow if you bend it the other way. Imma call it the Kimura.
They are talking about philosophy. Not physics or technology.

So what constitutes "being able to defend yourself"?

What if I'm a BJJ brown belt and I meet Renzo Gracie? I'm gonna get smashed.

What if prime Renzo Gracie meets prime Sakuraba? Renzo's getting smashed.

What if Renzo meets strongest man in the world Thor Björnsson? Renzo's getting smashed.

That doesn't make us better philosophers or more intelligent though.
