I don't think Trump cares about anyone else other than China and the other countries' tariffs are strictly to generate headlines. If you look back at the history of Trumps advisors here then they basically seem in favour of returning to something more akin to the Bretton Wood's system of the mid 20th century. Not sure it would take exactly the same form as that system were currency's linked to the US dollar or not but the basic idea would be that you would have to "choose a side" much more than the Reaganite free market system, if you want easier access to US markets you'd need to agree to make US imports cheaper than at present and wouldn't be able to get away with your own protectionism as much.

I do think you can see a thread across a lot of Trumps actions and pronouncements since taking office, I think there is a certain degree of realism behind them, an acknowledgement that the US dominance of the post cold war era is probably not sustainable in the future. The actual plans to try and deal with this maybe highly questionable and driven by his own ego but the general idea seems to be the US needs to build up a much more direct sphere of influence rather than depend on economic dominance which is fast evaporating in the face of China's and other nations growth.

Lesotho was hit with 40% tariffs IIRC, they make + 400 000 Levis jeans / month.
I wonder if Levis will bring production to the US..
I am sure they will be able to pay a good wage to the American workers... and of course the price for the jeans will be.... uhm.

What if it's worse than that? I've always been pretty conservative, but this MAGA shit is cancer. And my biggest fear with Trump has ALWAYS been his narcissism.

So what if...he actually doesn't care in the same way Xi doesn't have to? Trump can't run for reelection. He's old. And he's a narcissist. He's not a sadist in that he WANTS the American people to suffer, but his ego might absolutely have him thinking "I know better, and this 'short term pain' will serve you all well in the long run". Hell, we're already hearing it in regards to the markets tanking. If he drives us into a bad recession, do you think it likely he capitulates, accepts blame, and tries to pull the plane out of the nosedive? Or that he quadruples down and tells the American people it's "for our own good" as he's one foot out the door on his way to Mar A Lago?

Ideally he will listen to Musk and the rest of his circle outside Navarro that tell him this isn't the way. But if he doesn't? There's no guarantee that approval ratings at 10% or widespread pain are gonna change his mind.
