If McGregor Doesn't Meet The Hype

The more reasonable question is what will happen if the GOAT meets the hype which is much more likely than the other way around imo.

He beats Poirier and he's next in line for a title shot. So he's pretty close to meet the expectations actually.

So he's greater than Anderson, GSP, Aldo, Fedor? Really?

This is the reason I stay out of the Heavies.

but that has nothing to do with the rest of the point. I don't see how people can even argue that he isn't legit.

If he wishes to become GOAT, then he's on the right track. Will he? Who knows. We'll see, but it's pretty evident he can hang with the big boys.
 
He'll have to lose a few in a row and go complete Junie Browning to lose his popularity.

I don't think that's the case though. Plenty of noobs that actually buy into it, whether the 'haters' are saying it sarcastically or not
 
He's been living up to the hype. He's been hyping himself, then winning fights. Not bad. When he loses, life moves on.

The problem with "hype train derailed" people is they suffer from confirmation bias. A "hyped" fighter can go on a two to three year winning streak, and they'll still salivate at the train derailment. Then, when the fighter eventually loses, suddenly they are bums and were always bums. Typical Sherdog.

Some people still refer to Fedor as hype, the guy who kept winning for almost a decade. That's a crazy set of horse blinders to not see your own weaknesses and biases.

I would say the ratio is a good 70/30 in favor of sarcasm here on sherdog.

You'll see a guy say McgreGOAT instead of McGregor in one thread and "Dustin will smash this guy in the first round" in the next, it ain't rocket science.

He's a breath of fresh air, and has the potential to hold a belt in the future.
 
I don't see how I'm shitting on the guy. I said I'd like to see him live up to the hype.

But he'd have to be very successful for many years to be goat. Right now he's Brandon Vera with better clothes. To even be the top in his division would be a minor miracle considering he'd have to top Aldo.

I guess being undefeated in the UFC winning all your fights by domination, including 2 first round stoppages in the fucking featherweight division is "all hype"?

I know you hate him because of the hype he has on Sherdog, but have you bothered to think about how pathetic it is to hate someone based on their internet fans?
 
Well at this stage the hype is that he'll be P4P GOAT and spacepope as well as curing cancer.

His style is exciting enough and he's an interesting enough person that even if he got to a failed title fight, I think he will still have his fair share of honest supporters.

What happens? Absolutely nothing.

To understand the legions of McGregors fans, you have to understand what it means to be Irish, of Irish descent and the fighting pride that the Irish people embody. The moniker is not "the winning Irish", it is "the fighting Irish". As long as Conor shows up and fights his heart out, it will be of little consequence what his record is. Sure, there will be some casual fans that will jump the boat but those that understand Irish pride already recognize what he has done.

Your question implies that the destination is more important than the journey. The fact that UFC Dublin, arguably the greatest event in UFC history (crowd wise/energy) happened as a result of Conor is point and proof that he has already 'made it'. The Irish have been fighting since the dawn of man and losing for the past 700 years. Winning and losing is not important but fighting on, no matter the cost, is what the Irish are about.

So very many people are perplexed, even mad, about the spotlight Conor has received. Unconditional support is a foreign thing to many sports fans and especially with younger generations and the people of today. Go back and watch Egan vs Holloway. Egan gets wrecked but the crowd cheers him on and that prelim fight was louder than the main event. One cannot make like comparisons to the UK, Sweden, Japan or any other country for there is only one fighting Irish and they earned that title for a reason over thousands of years.
