He mixes them up well but he’s not the best at any of the martial arts. The fact he has to rely on his wrestling against MVP , shows he can’t hang with the big dogs. He has good striking , good jiu jitsu, decent takedowns, but he’s not the best at any of them, and his striking is overrated.

He’s at that stage of bisping when he fought Stann. A striker that will grapple a better striker, and strike if the other guy can’t.

It’s boring for us, but it’s necessary to reach that next level where in a couple of years, he’ll have the veteran experience, and higher IQ to maybe where he can get his bisping/rockhold moment. I can’t hate the guy for just being smart

I wouldn't describe it as "tooling." There were no knockdowns or big moments. I can't even remember him wobbling Prates. It was textbook solid point fighting, no doubt.

The only guy who got meaningfully hurt the entire fight was Garry in the 5th. Prates lacks 5 round experience and didn't have a good concept on how he should be pacing himself. Garry is legit world class at point fighting.

Prates will improve from the experience, but I think we've already seen Garry's upper potential.

And as much as I expected Prates to gas, he had his best round in the fifth. He didn’t have the gas to put Garry away, but consider that he really didn’t have high output in the earlier rounds. If he really was gassed, it was because he was defending takedowns. Pacing was not his issue. Lack of a skillset to deal with Garry’s gameplan was his issue. He’s also a smoker. Garry is simply better at mixing the martial arts than Prates. No need to make excuses for Prates and then try to downplay the point fighting clinic that Garry put on. I’m not saying it’s exciting, but it’s apparently hard to deal with.

Good for Prates, catching Garry late, but if we look at the fight as a whole, he was soundly outstruck and beaten. Excluding the 5th round, it was a total shutout.

Curious how you anticipate Prates growing. Is he going to start mixing in takedowns if he can’t corner his opponent and hammer them? Or is he just going to do what he did against Garry and hope to catch them late?

I like Prates. He has an exciting style, but getting stymied by Irish wrestling doesn’t bode well for someone who is being touted as future contender. He defended takedowns well enough (stuffed 15/19), but couldn’t deter Garry from further attempts. Happy to be wrong, but at this point I think Prates’ ceiling is to be a ranked guy who’s an exciting fan favorite, but will always lose to more well rounded fighters who can gameplan.

All that said, I desperately want to see him fight JDM or Buck.

All his tools are there to avoid the fight, not finish it.

Sadly that's how a lot of UFC champions fight. When you fight like Topuria does, you end up like Cody Garbrandt in the long run.

Anything can happen in MMA, and being overly aggressive can get you KO'd in a flash. That's why champions tend to be these fighters that fight smart and avoid risks, preferring to safely score points.

I agree. He's very very risk averse. A striker with Zero aggression and finishing ability unless it's offered in a platter for him.

Hes just a slightly better version of Leon Edwards. Very boring striker, doesn't take any risks and is content winning rounds as safe as possible. More power to him if he can make a lot of money fighting that way but we know UFC fans want to see blood lol.

I swear I watched a completely different fight than everyone else.

First 3 rounds I saw Ian closing distance, landing clean boxing combinations, even rocking Prates a few times (including a beautiful uppercut that had Carlos wobbled and backing up). Didn't look like "point fighting" to me at all, looked like Garry was actually going for it for the first time I've seen in a really fucking long time.

I'm not going to diminish Prates either - guy has hundreds of Muay Thai fights and literally toyed with all of his opponent's on the feet thus far in the UFC until he fought Ian.

Totally fair, we're just disagreeing on word choice but I take your meaning well. IMO it looked like hard sparring, and Prates was never materially in danger, but got solidly out pointed the entire time.

IMO both things are true. There is no substitute for 5 round experience against someone who's already done it multiple times against world ranked opponents. Prates doesn't even know what he doesn't know, and it showed.

No doubt Garry has repeatedly showed us he's an outstanding point fighter, and Prates didn't have a good plan for that. Every time he would get something going, Garry danced away with no fuss. We can cut together all the clips of Garry legit jogging away from the action it would probably be 2-3 min long. Prates has to know how to deal with this.

I don't think anyone anywhere found the decision win controversial? About as clean cut as it gets, I had it 4-1.

Prates has legit hands of death. Guys with freaky power that are acclimated to people falling over dead when you hit them clean, have to work their way out of the mindset that its the only game plan.

Prates has to learn to win rounds, and the KO comes when it comes. He already has all the tools and his counter wrestling looked outstanding.

Fight Nerds is IMO the most interesting team in the sport, 5 round experience against a ranked point fighter in their prime is something you need to go through. I think he'll be better for it.
