Ian Garry - The Dying Star

He was getting beaten up.

No, he was fighting a guy who was significantly better than him.

Boy Garry was LITERALLY seconds away from getting starched dead. Prates' low fight IQ cost him this fight.

You can like him or not. I personally don't, but that could also be because I don't have that many Irish people in my favorite sports, which, after Conor McGregor, could have given me a more positive image of the Irish as a whole. You could call it biased, I suppose.
But on the other hand:
He gave Shavkat a real fight, one that no one expected, probably not even Shavkat himself.
He had a game plan against one of the best strikers in MMA that, on the one hand, brought him victory and, on the other, completely deprived MVP of his tools.
And now he's fought an up-and-comer on short notice and defeated him decisively, despite not completing a full training camp.
Anyone who still doubts Garry's qualities is either beyond help or is also biased and a fool who believes every piece of crap they find on the internet.
Sorry, but when it comes purely to his performance in the cage, there is little you can criticize Garry for.

Here's the truth about Ian.
Could he become a UFC champ? Maybe.
Will he? Probably not, but maybe.
Will he be a star? No. People have already lost interest in the guy. It appeared for a moment he might be a star rising (See Suga, See Paddy). He's boring, inoffensive (even when he tries to be) and doesn't inspire any kind of fierce loyalty.

I'm not even against point fighters in general -- some of my favorite fighters were largely point fighters like GSP, Edgar, volk etc etc -- So the fact that Ian's style bugs me is saying something lol. I think it's because Ian never looks particularly dominant doing his thing, and he rarely ever hurts guys. At least guys like GSP, edgar, and volk have had plenty of fights where they push the pace and rough guys up a bit, you know? Ian's style is to just dictate the range and try to look pretty and pristine the whole fight. It's just not for me.

The thing that bugs me about him is that he gets on his wheels or holds on for dear life as soon as he gets hit in any way.

In some ways he reminds me of Rory McDonald, a guy who outgrapples the strikers and oustrikes the grapplers. Rory was more fun to watch though, and sometimes got lulled into brawls (especially against Lawler) which wasn't his best career move. Prime vs. prime, Rory vs. Ian would be an interesting fight.

And believe it or not, Rory is 1 year younger than Belal. Sad how some fighters age out early or "lose their soul" after certain fights.

Another thread full of drooling meatheads complaining about a fighter going for the “hit and don’t get hit” strategy instead of sacrificing their braincells just so some morons get a shred more entertainment value.
Perfectly said!!

This "boring fighter" comes from ppl who don't even know what is it like getting punched, so it's just so lame.
