I had my match with team beast black belt, Finally

You are correct, sir. I was using the term sweep loosely. Didin't matter, it was a no point, submission only tournament

Oh i missed that part lol.

Its tough dealing with someone with that kind of size and strength and even minimal training. Did you have a gameplan going in?

I would probably do a lot of lapel work too, and go for omoplatas if I could. Definitely work on being faster than the guy and playing a smaller man's game, avoiding half guard if possible.

I know how you feel, being almost the same size as you. Going against a monster is weird since we are used to being larger and or stronger than most of our opponents. Keith is pretty big though isn't he? Thats a plus for your training at least.

Cleaning out 4 divisions in a no time limit submission only tournament is on some ironman shit. You're a beast man.

Hey Boise, Do you know that you are BAD ASS!!!

Freakin awesome, bro!

Are you going to do the no gi worlds?

Thanks Bro. I think the next comp will be Pan Ams. That nice Koi pond I'm building in my back yard took all my traveling money for awhile.

Thanks, Keith and I are almost exactly the same size. I couldn't count how may people think we are Brothers. They think it's like Clay Guida and his brother. He made Black belt so his slacker brother though he give jiu jitsu a try.
I did ok in his half guard, but he didn't threaten any subs.

Thanks for all the kind words, Bros! ( I don't think Hillary commented? sigh...)

Here are some stats from the tournament I though are interesting:
Here are some sub only stats for you:
Average match length Gi: 5:45
Average match length Nogi: 5:30

Most common sub gi: Arm bar
...Most Common sub nogi: head and arm choke (darce, brabo, ect)

Next Northwest Sub Challenge is in April 2011. It will be regular time and points. Hope I get a rematch.

I enjoyed the match, but I don't really understand the whole gym bashing stuff.

Especially considering the Ari Bolden stuff. I mean is he legit?

No question the bjj from that gym has a lower standard than your gym, but I'm willing to bet you could find some stud middle weight Purple belt out of a major gym like gym like Alliance in Atlanta or Fight Sports in South Florida that would tool Keith Owen.

But great job, the armbar was nice especially coming from a heavy weight.

What is your point? I am also sure there are blackbelts in there 40's in the middleweight division that Boise Fireman could beat.

@Boise- Great job in beating someone who was stronger and bigger than you. Size does matter!

Keith might get beat but he would show solid BJJ and grappling.

That huge black guy did nothing but stall and it clearly showed that he wasn't even blue belt level in BJJ.

The one thing that is hard for me to swallow is the website: It states he got his black belt in brasilian jiu jitsu in 1996. That's before Roy Harris! That's a 4th degree black belt. Come on, please. Just read some of the website. Just be honest.

some great pix of ricky wearing his black belt with his hand raised against blue belts...marketing genius.

Well, hmm ...

1) Ari is definitely a legit BJJ blue belt. I watched all of his gi matches at the Sub Challenge in April. He did not dominate, but he did not get dominated.

2) The whole gym bashing thing has nothing to do with that gym having a lower standard of BJJ. The bashing comes from the fact that both of their instructors claim black belts with no verifiable lineage. They are so caught up in their lies that they cannot keep their stories straight; at one point Barvo claimed to be a 2nd degree black, then later on said that he is working towards his 2nd; Barvo has also (on many occasions) mixed up the year that he got his "black belt" - 2006, 2007, and 2008 have all been given as the year at one point or another; at one point, Ricky Robinson's bio page on the Team Beast site said that he has been practicing BJJ since 1996, and now it's saying that he got his "black belt" in 1996. Take your pick of the reasons for bashing those guys, sir. Its not about skill (even though its obvious that Ricky Robinson has very little of it). I cant say a damn thing about Barvo's mat skills, he could be decent for all I know. But this is about respect for the sport that they claim to represent.

Wow boisefireman that was nice.... Man, thats a big boy to have laying on top of you for 5 minutes... Did he doing anything besides try and smash you the whole match??? I'm 6'4 205 and he probably would have killed me hahaha.. Way to catch big boy slipping!!!

Surely this must be the last comp he ever enters?

Why isn't this basically fraud?

You can't put a BMW hood ornament on a Lada and sell it as a BMW.

I agree.

The way I see it...if some dude wants to walk around his little town in a black belt and say he is a black belt...he is just a douchebag liar..nothing more.

But once he starts charging students money to train with a "black belt", he is commiting fraud IMO.

The customer is not getting what they are paying for, what has been represented, and that is fraud. However, any court you bring this too would be uninterested I'm sure...and they wouldn't understand the intricacy and difference between what is being paid for and what was expected.

It's a shame that these individuals can continue unchecked.
