To be fair he fought for Germany in the war and lived in Germany at the time of his upraising. It wasn't his country of birth but his country of residence. And he goes on to say that that the problem came "when Hitler turned on Russia" which was well after Jews had their rights stripped, and Kristallnacht, and concentration camps and executions, which implies all that wasn't a problem to that point.
