How much do you tip when you go out to eat?

Yes I have. Food and service there is sub par.
Are you going to troll/derail every thread you post in?

Save the response in this thread (it derails it further ) but you can pm me. It's getting old

there's a nasty stereotype that black people don't tip well, so I feel like I have to overtip at times to break away from the stereotype. I'm just being honest

shouldn't let the racist tropes of oppressors dictate your actions. that'd be like me not buggering 6-7 guys during a party just because :eek::eek:s are stereotyped as promiscuous

besides, if you tip too much, they might stereotype you as a auntie (?) tom

I'm glad we were able to reach our Mayberry tip thread quota for the year. Just barely made it too.

I usually tiround numbers, eg if the bill is $19, I'll tip $5. When I do the math in my head, after the fact, it's usually in 20-25% range. And for the record, I consider myself a generous tipper(assuming at least halfway decent service). Service industry people generally work hard, have to constantly have a good attitude, and as such deserve to be compensated accordingly. But I could do without this attitude of entitlement that some of them have. Bringing me a sandwich does not entitle you to a 20% tip. Let alone if said service is mediocre.

I'd say I average 18-20%. I'm always kind to waitstaff but do have an expectation of quality service. If I get poor service and it's due to the servers apathy, the tip will reflect. If I get poor service because the place is packed and the server seems to be doing their best, I usually tip well.

The other main factor is if I like the person. Are they clean, well kept, personable, mindful, etc. If I'm impressed it's nothing to tip 30-50%. I live comfortably and enjoy giving to others so there's that.

If its order at the bar/counter sit down and then bring you your food then nothing.

Depends where I am as well, if its in the UK im less likely to tip, if im in a country where its more expected then Im more likely to.

if its restaurant with table service and the service is particularly good then i will tip, but usually i just round up. So if bill is £45.50 will pay £50, if bill is £28 will pay £30 etc but i would rarely tip in the UK. I do abroad but thats partly as its more customary and also i guess on vacation you are in a better mood.

In the UK however is the service is substandard (or the food is substandard) then I would certainly complain and expect a reduction on my bill. (And in the UK if you have cause for complaint generally your bill will be reduced minus the offending article)

that probably sums up britain to be honest.
Good service/food - no tip, pay the bill
bad service/food - reduction in bill

As oppose to america
bad service/food - small tip
good service/food - big tip

Overall ive never understood tipping, people are paid to give you good service, why do we think you pay for bad service and pay more for good service. If you go into a shop to buy a tv an the shop keeper is welcoming and friendly you dont pay an extrra £30 for the telly, you dont chuck £200 on top of the cost of a car for good service, why this obsession with tipping waiters

I just came back from the pub. Watched some football. Bill was $40.50, I left $60.

I generally tip nice. It's a tough job... one I use to have.

I just don't tip guys, I think dudes trying to wait on me is pretty gross. You aren't allowed to tip the young gentleman who loads the groceries into your car @ the supermarket because it's expressly haram and sends the wrong message to men.

You forget that you are part of an establishment that SERVES me as a COURTESY. Being an entitled snob about things is only going to make things harder on you chumps. Male bartenders better have me CRUNK off that first sip or I'm paying you in all change. It's about setting positive examples.

How about you guys?

I thought I was familiar with all the trolls of Mayberry & WR, but I missed one.

Starting at 20% but much more if I being comped which happens a lot due to my connections. And if you don't tip at least 18%, you shouldn't go out to eat.

Usually 15%-20%.

Not a chance I'm tipping on a takeout order. The only people that do that are:

Hacks
Nobodies
Has beens
Never-was's

isn't charity one of the pillars? i jest

tipping should not be mandatory and if people think they are entitled to a tip, they should go slap themselves several times in the bathroom mirror

in britain, we don't tip for (union) jack shit. just the way it should be. i dont have to be the one to correct your shitty management. also, you can always get a different job. and why dont we tip nurses and shit who help us mend? or the garbage men? etc

now, if i have a favorite restaurant-which i do-and everybody caters to me and gives ME extras and special treatment like trying a new item for free, letting me in when there's hardly seating, giving me insider discounts? maybe

but that whole tipping >15% or more is for fucking suckers being played like baboons on a leash by poacher waitresses. pathetic. just find yourself a whore if you're that desperate for female attention and meaningless flirtation
You don't tip garbage men? You sound poor.

This. Sounds like everyone in the UK of the best part of it, waiters/servers etc are on £6.70 is minimum now? That's like more than $10 an hour to you Americans and they do get tips, they make a decent wage I know I'm America they get a shit hourly rate and expect tips but why should the customer pay for the staff? Surely that should be the businesses responsibility? If the business didn't have staff there would be no business

Why is there a tipping thread nearly every month? Is it really that interesting of a subject?

It would be nice if a sticky was created in here that linked to a 'master' thread on subjects like this that are made monthly.

Minimum wage is $11.20, and minimum wage for servers is $10.20. I tip 15%, but I dislike that tipping seem mandatory. I just do it automatically, as if the cost of the meal is always 15% more. It's a huge guilt trip, too.

If I go to a place a lot, like this Indian joint I used to go to out west i will tip a few bucks even when I'm getting take out.

Other than that usually the customary 15%. In Asia I ate out more and rarely tipped.

i love how much tread this topic gets when it gets brought up...\

...every 2 months.

Answer: i tip 15-20 (unless its a botch job and was due directly because of the errors of the server)

BUT

i support peoples right to not tip. Dont make something optional and then get pissed when people chose the side you dont like; thats what insecure people do.

unless its religion or politics/
