How much do you tip when you go out to eat?

Whoa. Let's not put the cart in front of the horse now...

It would be nice if a sticky was created in here that linked to a 'master' thread on subjects like this that are made monthly.
Entered this thread to post the same thing. Mayberry needs a sticky thread for tipping discussions.
It is amazing how frequently this thread is created.

That or a thread that links to all of the major discussions with popular topics that are frequently created.

honestly i get confused on whether you're supposed to tip when you order and pick up food :x
i always order and get delivery, but awhile back i just went and picked it up bc was running around town doing stuff anyways
and i was like
do i tip?
for delivery i tip bc they had to drive out to my place
when eating at place i tip for the service
but what do i tip for if im just picking up food? i thought maybe i tip bc the food is good, but then, i mean, thats kinda what im already paying for? so what do!!!

That's a great question. I feel guilted into tipping them 15% when the option appears on the debit. Sometimes, if I know in advance their debits are like that I'll pay in cash. Delivery and dine-in I always tip 15%, 20-25% if the bartender at the lounge is serving drinks that need to be prepared. Our servers here in Canada earn much more than down south.

The revised forum should have included this.

That is another issue - popping the top off a beer bottle or pouring a draft and expected to tip at least 15%, the same as a 6 ingredient cocktail; shouldn't the cocktail warrant a bigger tip than the beer?
If a tip was truly service based, it wouldn't be based on the total cost, that is more like a commission, the waiter puts in as much effort bringing me a $12 plate of food as he does a $60 steak.

Goddammit, I'm being sucked into another tipping thread.

double the tax. Usually just round it up if not a whole number.
