How much do you tip when you go out to eat?

TS u sound like the jerk lady @ dunkin donuts

Herpa derp. Everything different from my culture is wrong and evil. How enlightened.
I guess you enjoy being ripped off. Or maybe you enjoy a sense of superiority after you leave a "decent tip". Tipping is for suckers, plain and simple.

It's not being ripped off though. It's paying for a provided service. It's a a bizarre system but it's what we have. They underpay waitstaff with the expectation you'll make up the difference. If their service sucks they make nothing. If we did away with tipping they would have to raise the wages of servers and then prices would go up anyway, so you're paying for it either way. Much like sex, one way or another you're paying.

It is silly that businesses have gotten consumers to subsidize the employees wages in this way. Hey btw haven't seen you in a bit

Dito, I am pretty active in the WR and the Star Trek threads around here.

a recent trip to joes crab shack with there no tipping thing cost me $80 for 2 an service was crap

A spineless culture
I disagree, eating out in the US is so cheap compared to where I live and then you add in the shit wage that workers get paid, I'm more than happy to tip them, I don't tip when back home though

Thats the outcome of your tipping culture. They take away tips at one particular restauran and the world goes to shit.

isn't charity one of the pillars? i jest

Usual 15 to 20%. If it's a hot friendly waitress then usually like 50%.

tipping should not be mandatory and if people think they are entitled to a tip, they should go slap themselves several times in the bathroom mirror

in britain, we don't tip for (union) jack shit. just the way it should be. i dont have to be the one to correct your shitty management. also, you can always get a different job. and why dont we tip nurses and shit who help us mend? or the garbage men? etc

now, if i have a favorite restaurant-which i do-and everybody caters to me and gives ME extras and special treatment like trying a new item for free, letting me in when there's hardly seating, giving me insider discounts? maybe

but that whole tipping >15% or more is for fucking suckers being played like baboons on a leash by poacher waitresses. pathetic. just find yourself a whore if you're that desperate for female attention and meaningless flirtation

I always leave at least 20% unless they service was meh then I'll leave 10. I believe in positive reciprocity and being generous to others.

However if service and attitude was truly abysmal I'll leave whatever change I have in the bottom of the water glass, but that's only happened a few times in my life and I eat out a lot.

Nurses and garbage men make a living wage already. Servers do not, and tipping is a direct trade off for there incredibly low wages. It's a weird system to be sure and you can easily say well it's not my problem what anyone makes and just be a jerk about it if you like. It's done out of courtesy, it isn't mandatory. And you don't tip because the server is flirty or hot unless that's your thing. You tip for the service provided.

A lot of the people that don't seem to get it aren't American, and presumably waitstaff in other countries are paid a higher wage by the establishment and expected to provide good service. In america it's legal to pay below minimum wage with the expectation tips will cover the difference. I agree it's a stupid system but I'm not stiffing someone so they make 8 bucks an hour unless they suck at their job.

anyone who tips below 20% is a no manner savage and doesnt contribute to society

I tip 33% at decent to nice restaurants and tip 5-6 bucks for breakfast at diner type places my bill is usually 7-15 bucks for breakfast plus tip.

I'll be honest...I tip way more than I should. I do this for two reasons. 1, there's a nasty stereotype that black people don't tip well, so I feel like I have to overtip at times to break away from the stereotype. I'm just being honest. Second reason I'm a great tipper is because you never know the day these people are having. They probably put up with a lot of mess, so I feel like being a generous tipper might make them feel a little bit better.

Quality of service does play a huge role though. Saw that in some earlier post, and I agree.
