So, how excited are we about Gable Stevenson?
I remember a while ago Henry Cejudo transitioning into MMA. I don't know if you remember, but there was a bit of hype around potential Cejudo vs Abas MMA fight, which never happened.
And there were guys like Askren, Hendricks, Cormier, Romero, and so on, debuting, and obviously none of these guys have perhaps visibility that Stevenson does.
I know Hendricks had ugly MMA wrestling, but he had a beautiful wrestling on the mat, but I digress. I think Askren always had ugly wrestling in and out of the mat lol.
It's funny, because we always had and will have people reminiscing about the past, but without any bias, i think it's absolutely true that, we have seen the best that MMA has to offer. I think we've seen it all. I think I was more excited about Judo vs Boxing, Nishijima vs Yoshida, in 2005 or 2006, than most of fights that happened this year. If you haven't been around to follow the sport, I mean, you didn't miss out on anything in hindsight though. But it still was better but if you missed it, well you just missed it.
When it comes to Stevenson, I feel like it's rare where I watch people on tv and impressed by their speed. Sure, some flyweight guys, or some freak of nature like Manny in boxing, and so on, but it's fairly rare. But Stevenson looks like he has very fast shots, and I don't know if anyone at hw can stop that at all. With his age, he's probably the best wrestling prospect we've seen, especially with his athleticism.
But he doesn't seem that interesting nor exciting. I don't know. Maybe because we've seen all we could see up to this point. Or maybe it feels like he's just getting shoved down our throats right now. And really, he's been taking Ls left and right before coming into MMA. Couldn't cut it in WWE, couldn't cut it in NFL, even lost to a younger guy in arguably the biggest upset of wrestling history. It all has been Ls, Ls, and Ls, before finally deciding to transition over.
Let's not forget that he's training with Jackson. It's obviously debatable how good of a coach he is, his prime years are past him, but it's also undeniable and we can all agree on, he tend to pump out boring fighters with boring game plans, so there's that as well.
All in all, I'm about 3/10 excited about Gable Stevenson. Yeah, he is probably the best wrestling prospect we've ever seen. I'd still rate Pico as better prospect, but he's arguably the second best prospect perhaps of all time. But, MMA is sorta in the gutters. You get guys who suck like Paddy and O'Malley get titleshots purely through cherry picking, when there are plenty guys outside top 50 who could run through them, easily. ( I said this when O'Malley was a champ so not abandoning that shitty badnwagon of his.)
Just wondered how excited we all are about this guy.
