Still a democracy, but it's been backsliding for most of the 21st century. The American obsession with believing the 2A is the most important defense for democracy is one of the reasons, since it's come at the expense of ignoring other more critical factors. Freedom of speech, free press, economic inequality, etc.

Hopefully it reverses, but so far the trajectory is accelerating in the wrong direction.

Also another reason for the backsliding: Imperial wars always come home, and their impact is rarely pro-democracy.

My overall thoughts are what's flying under the radar is the impact of the digital revolution on society, and how there will be a big adjustment period that people will have to work through. Society on the whole has more/less decided that it's ok to go to a post-truth structure (lying is not to be punished, but understood as part of the game), and that people's spiritual axis of understanding sacredness versus profanity, even without a religious bend, is to be broken such that nothing is sacred and profanity spread and accepted. And finally, an overall infantilization of society, where lack of accountability and atomization of people in society keeps theoretically smart people very far from reaching fulfillment but instead talking and acting in very immature ways.

So as societies basically turn their ethics upside down, it follows to me that politics goes upside down as well. As such, politics becomes largely a full on circus, with the biggest source of comedy coming from the political realm. And it just follows that ethics in our politics will also suffer as respect for institutions, rule of law, meritocracy keep going down the downward spiral. There is no smart discourse to be had, and no standards for one to follow, and no feeling of shame or embarrassment amongst the voters. Democracy compared to other systems is an honor system, where people buy into it and honor the institutions and procedures; but our ethics have moved away from honor to just pigs at a trough trying to bully to get their hands on whatever slop they can. So why wouldn't there be a shift away from democracy?
