How bad is Ben Askren's boxing really?

Askren's boxing is fucking appalling. He's also 36. He's also coming off major hip surgery.

Paul has been training boxing full time for 3 years, training with and sparring with actual pro boxers, and is trained by a guy who fought for a world title in boxing. He's also about 13 years younger, has a size advantage, and is more athletic.

I hope I'm wrong, but Askren is going to lose, probably badly. He was handpicked for a reason.
Jake Paul is not more athletic than Ben Askren. Even at 36, I'd say Askren has the superior cardio over Jake. Cardio will be an issue for Jake after the second round.

I'm sure he's been training striking for many years. Some people just never get good at it. He's one of those guys.

He has zero coordination for anything related to striking. That guy can't even move correctly.

It’s not good but he never used his boxing to really strike. Outside of the Maia fight he Just used it to defend punches to wrestle.

Ben is tough as nails who had tremendous cArdio. And one of the finest collegiate wrestlers and an Olympic level athlete. The fight is going to go awhile with Ben probably wearing him out and getting a too late.

Bens no stranger to get punched in the face. That Paul kid is.
i Iike circus fights so I’m actually looking forward to watching this.

Jake Paul is not Brock Lesnar. He's not a freak of nature. He's an asshole who has fought a basketball player and this guy:

We're all picking Jake Paul to beat him but let's really think about it. Askren has been training striking every day, sparring pro fighters, for 10+ years with Anthony Pettis, Tyron Woodley, Mighty Mouse, and RDA. He's a championship athlete in 2 different sports. People are acting like he's so bad that he'd get KOd by random in-shape guys at the local cross fit gym or random street fighters.

Is it really possible to train striking everyday for 10 years at a professional and be that bad? Or is it more realistic that he's actually very good compared to the average person, and just looks really bad against pro fighters?
I feel he's never tried to be a striker, hence why he looks like shit standing. But I feel if he tried he could at least reach Damien Maia level. Competent, but not great.

And as you said, he's been training striking in some form for a decade. He has WAY more of a head start that Jakes last 3 opponents combined. If Funky focuses SOLELY on boxing, I think he could at least put together a good smothering style strategy and possible wear down Jake and maybe tko him.

I see this clip and I subconsciously hear the Benny Hill theme song in my head.

I'm surprised so many otherwise reasonable people think that Jake Paul is definitely going to win, and KO Askren.
Suprised!? If you knew nothing about these two guys and compared them who would you think was the better striker?

He is younger, looks to be more of a natural striker and I would bet he has trained more in strict boxing than Askren. And according to the Ariel interview the dude hasn't sparred since 2016!

Again, Paul has been training full time as a boxer for 3 years. He's either 23 or 24. Askren's body has been going through hell for probably 20 years and he's coming off major hip surgery. At this point, I'm more athletic than Ben.

Ben wasn’t outclassed anywhere in the fight. Made a mistake on the floor and mma grappling goat made him pay.

That's my take. People are focused on clips and the gifs of the backhand and the goofy stuff. In the actual shots landed it was close.

The thing people are also missing on that backhand clip is that it's the third round, Maia's face is in much worse shape than Askren's, and he's moving away the whole time. No one is mistaking Maia for Canelo Alvarez, but he got hit hard a few times that fight and wasn't taking Askren's standup as lightly as most of the Sherdoggers here.

And I'm quite convinced that Damian Maia is a lot tougher than Jake Paul.

We're taking his boxing lightly. Because he isn't a boxer.
