How bad is Ben Askren's boxing really?

Ben has shown pretty awful striking in general over his career, don't know why he would put himself in this situation where he could very realistically lose to Jake Paul. Ben has been training in MMA for a long time and he's no spring chicken anymore.. Can't teach an old dog new tricks, or in this case how to be a decent boxer.

Plain and simple his striking is awful from every standpoint. I can't recall ever seeing him throwing any punches with good technique.

Paul also has probably a solid 20 to 30lbs of muscle on him over Askren.

If Paul is going to sit back and talk about how he is taking boxing serious then step up to the plate and fight a boxer because fighting these fights isn't going to do anything for your "boxing career"

Its really bad. Its suprising that a guy who trains with strikers like Pettis could still be that bad after so long, but it is what it is.

Cant imagine why Ben agreed to this

Good Lord. Jake Paul is going to absolutely murder Askren. It's going to be embarassing.
I'm actually looking forward to this match. And then here the call out of Mcgregor. It's going to be absolutely hilarious.

We're all picking Jake Paul to beat him but let's really think about it. Askren has been training striking every day, sparring pro fighters, for 10+ years with Anthony Pettis, Tyron Woodley, Mighty Mouse, and RDA. He's a championship athlete in 2 different sports. People are acting like he's so bad that he'd get KOd by random in-shape guys at the local cross fit gym or random street fighters.

Is it really possible to train striking everyday for 10 years at a professional and be that bad? Or is it more realistic that he's actually very good compared to the average person, and just looks really bad against pro fighters?

Stop reading at picking jake paul to beat him...

Im not....askren is a professional..jake is not...

Ben has been hitting pads /bags and sparring for atleast a decade.....

He just needs to focus on boxing alone for several months and he'll be fine...he has to clean it up.. The rest is in place already as far as work ethic and mentality/heart of a fighter..hes not gunna be a spazzing out from nerves like nate robinson was..hes also not starting from.the rock bottom..he knows how.to throw strikes and defend..

i actually expect him to beat jake paul. i think he's tough enough to be able to walk him down with his hands up and mix in hard stiff jabs until jake paul breaks

Ben Askren has the worst boxing *in MMA*

Now translate that into the boxing ring, it goes negative.

Jake Paul actually looks like he's pretty good. If he weren't a YouTuber no one would be trashing him....mainly because no one would have heard of him as a boxer, of course.

Do people think Maia would get knocked out by Jake Paul too?

Was Maia and Askren's boxing appreciably different?

Let's keep in mind that he'll focus exclusively on boxing without worrying about kicks, clinch-work, takedowns etc. His boxing-boxing can't be as bad as his MMA-boxing.

Some guys can be great at 1 thing (eg grappling) & crap at another thing (eg striking) despite continuously training at it. I used to get trained by Shogun's striking coach, & my striking was still crap. Sure, it improved, but it never became good. Even if a guy trained with the best grappler in the world for 1 yr, it doesn't mean a guy like Khabib still won't take him down. Askren's boxing really is bad, I'm sure he is tougher than Jake Paul, but his boxing skills are worse than some regular guys who've only trained boxing for a yr or 2.

Possibly the worst the UFC has ever seen (obviously excluding CM Punk).

Or close to it.

And I'm a funky fan too.
Speaking of Punk, didn't he train with Askren? That's probably why Askren thinks he can outclass someone in boxing. He schooled CM Punk in boxing. lol

I mean I reckon it isn't very good but at the same time, we haven't really seen him box for a sustained period of time in any of his MMA fights. Furthermore, boxing in MMA is much different than boxing. I'm honestly just glad that we got to see him in the UFC before he retired.
