Do i really need to pull up the voting record in the south? They go conservative no matter what color the Liberal candidate is. Its not like Al Gore was going to win Alabama.

Perhaps we are misreading Jack, hence the reason I asked for him to clarify.

As you pointed out, the "Bible Belt" is staunchly conservative. Religion plays a prominent role in election cycles, and many in the south view the Democratic Party Platform as being incongruent with the tenets of Christianity. Hell, Herman Cain was pretty popular in the south - that is until his supposed sex scandal broke all over national headlines.

The claim that race somehow influenced the south's decision to support the GOP in the last election sounds like an absurd conspiracy theory if one actually bothers to delve into Bible Belt culture. Fred Luter was the President of the Southern Baptist Convention from 2012 till 2014. A BLACK MAN WAS THE HEAD OF THE SOUTHERN BAPTIST DENOMINATION...! The "Bible Belt" has gone to great lengths to distance itself from its sordid past.

Are you implying that racism prevails in the Bible Belt?

That's an oversimplification, but white resentment is a big part of the working-class Southern vote. For example, a lot of the reason for opposition to poverty-alleviating/reducing measures even from poor Southerners is based on fears (stoked by politicians) that such measures will primarily benefit minorities. You could probably broaden the overall divide to be urban/rural, but race plays a big part in the perception of what is urban there.

I was just at a large gathering where I heard a large group of older women (75+ year olds) talking about how they don't like women doing these 'men jobs' nowadays. Keep in mind these were women, not men. There are still a lot of traditional people who would not vote for a woman, plain and simple.

I would gladly vote for a woman, but Hillary is from the G-Dub era and she's a bought and paid for politician with ego problems.

Any country that elects a woman as it's head has really passed the point of no return. Decline of civilization, folks.

Make sure to buy lots of ads expressing that view before the election.

Germans > Modern day Americans

I wouldn't doubt that many German high-school graduates are smarter than most American college graduates. German education standards completely trump ours.

As much as I hate to say it, modern day Americans are mostly trash. Our politics are merely a reflection of the American public.

Most of them are far more likely to be bilingual too. I traveled with a pack packer in Australia from Germany. He was a stoner version of what most Germans would be and he was still smarter than a lot of Americans I meet. America needs to focus more on the world in their education system and less on themselves.

I was thinking this. I realize a majority of most populations are pretty much useless, but how can America tolerate the double speak? Anybody watching American politicians from around the world laughs at how transparent they are.

Obama is full of shit on an amateur level, and the guy is trying this shit on the heavy hitters of the world. I guess that's why nobody respects him.

Netanyahu, Putin, Harper, Abe, the dude from China :), all more respected than Obama. That's what race card politics gets you. Hopefully the Liberals have learned their lessons but I'm not hopeful.

This is because they have to be. European countries are all smaller than bigger US states and most have unique languages. Outside of Quebec few Candians are bilingual for similar reasons--at least in my experience. Sure all took at least some French but they don't use it and don't know it. They don't have to.

I know and work with lots of Europeans and all are multilingual. That does change when you start going to smaller towns or interact with less educated people. A grocery checker in Germany is going to have less than a smattering of English but University classes even for undergraduates may be entirely in English. (Supposedly there's a biology (II) professor at LMU in Munich that has has never taught a class in German)

If he was backpacking in Australia he was likely at least middle class and well educated. Importantly knowing another language doesn't mean you're smarter, though it does provide cognitive benefits.

Americans should be very familiar with Spanish. There is not a day that goes by that I do not encounter a Spanish speaking person and that is probably true for most Americans.

On topic: I hope Hillary will not be president, however I agree that she is the trash president that trash America deserves. Whoever will be the next president will have no choice but to flex military muscle because of the ineptitude of the prior administration.

This is a very good post, it's like people expect a farmer or average dude in Oklahoma to know or even care about the French tax rates or German Philosophers. They know the shit that goes on in NY or LA. That's is the land/people equivalent of Germans knowing about the French or Spainish shit that is going on. Also, it's easier to travel to a foreign country in Europe than it is for most Americans. I can't take a quick day trip or weekend trip to a foreign country (not counting Canada or Mexico), like a lot of Europeans can.

I'm now looking for a gig in New Zealand.

My country is super broken and I feel pioneering.

I could commit to being a kiwi.

Hillary is about to announce her candidacy soon, everyone get ready to be sexist if you don't like her.

Well, I think it's obvious that Obama didn't win solely because he was black because I think that it's obvious that it hurt more than it helped, but if your preferred takeaway is that it wasn't a major factor either way, that's also defensible. I don't think it's right to say that it made no difference, though. And, yeah, I don't think any good analysis of 2016 is going to put much weight on Clinton being a woman.

More important that the black turnout was the non-turnout of Republicans for Romney. If the same amount of Republicans who voted for McCain voted for Romney, he'd be in the Whitehouse now. But they stayed home.
