If they are ratting eachother out about them messaging, it's clearly because they respond....Unless they literally get 1 message of them asking them to "hang out" which I doubt....Asking to "hang out", only happens after you talk eachother in DMs...So they chose to talk to them.

As someone that's dating someone significantly younger, there's a pretty clear line between being older-but-legal and a phile. Just sheer ability to consent is a pretty huge factor. Sounds about right from the police perspective. Yes he was justified in actions up to the point that the perp had fled and he followed him outside with his gun and beat him some more. I'm actually quite glad he got his licks in.

He has the absolute freedom to defend his home and his daughter. He doesn't have the freedom to seek vengeance though once that person is longer threatening them.

He should have done his best to complete a citizens arrest by detaining him and then allowed the police to handle it.

The court also needs to be lenient though to. Understanding that a normal person without proper training can not always act intelligibly once the fight instinct begins.
