Three Israeli hostages mistakenly killed by soldiers in Gaza on Friday had used leftover food to write signs pleading for help, Israel says.

The men had been staying at the building next to where they were shot "for some period of time", according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

Officials have admitted that killing the men who were holding a white flag was a breach of "rules of engagement".

Israel is under increasing pressure for a deal to free more hostages.

About 120 are believed to be still in captivity in the Gaza Strip.

They were seized by militants during the 7 October Hamas attacks that killed around 1,200 in southern Israel.

Israel has launched a massive retaliatory operation it says is aimed at destroying Hamas.

More than 18,000 people have been killed in Gaza since, according to the local health authorities, with hundreds of thousands of others pushed out of their homes.

The following is what the IDF's top commander Herzi Halevi told his troops about the killing of the hostages who raised a white flag:

"I tell you very simply - this situation is a very difficult and painful one, and no one will come and say otherwise. But beyond that, and we all understand this, I don't need to come and tell you this. I tell you that this situation could easily have not happened. Think about it, why did we start the ground operation? We set three goals: to dismantle Hamas, to restore security to the residents of the communities near the Gaza Strip, and you here on the corridor, from which such harsh attacks on Be’eri originated, and the third task is the return of the hostages.

Now we all very much want this. And I tell you, in this situation, three people came out, they took into account that they are taking a risk by approaching IDF troops, to minimize the risk they really thought, they took off their shirts so that no one would think they have an explosive device and held a white cloth on a pole to identify themselves, they came speaking Hebrew, calling for help. And we really, our soldiers whom I haven't met yet, but I'm sure they are the best because everyone wants to do well, and I'm sure they were confident they were doing the right thing. I'm speaking to you not to say if they were right or wrong, but so that we will be right going forward. You see two people, they are with hands up and without shirts, take two seconds, and I want to tell you something just as important, and if it's two Gazans with a white flag coming out to surrender why would we shoot at them? Absolutely not. Absolutely not. That's not the IDF. I'm telling you whoever got confused here, even those who fought and now lay down their arms and raise their hands, we arrest them, we don't shoot them.

We get a lot of intelligence from the captives we have, we already have over a thousand. We don't shoot them because the IDF doesn't shoot a person who raises their hands. That's strength, not weakness. And I tell you, I remember, what I said to my soldiers as a battalion commander before entering into Cast Lead, the last sentence in the briefing before fighting. Use your head. We always feel that fighting is with the hands, fighting is with the feet.

I tell you gentlemen, don't stop thinking for a second in combat. Whoever succeeds during the fighting to also uses his head, he hits the enemy better, gets hit less, he performs tactics better, he hurts our forces less, everything he does better, he is sharper on the environment, he identifies things. Always ask yourself questions, always work with your head, and hopefully, we will have another opportunity where captives will come to us or we will reach a house, and do the right thing. Continue to do excellent work, it is a great and strong force and we will need it going forward with the commanders, pass this also to all the soldiers."

Makes you wonder a bit. Like if there were Australian soldiers on video executing that kid outside that camp. I'd expect them to be charged. Pretty quickly.

The killing of the hostages with the white flag I'd definitely be pushing for some sort of criminal investigation as well. Definitely the morons responsibility stood down publicly at the very least.


Turns out .. " our bad " seems to suffice.

Which is odd when you consider how many people say Israel is operating within the properlegal channels in terms of waging this war and doing everything to prevent innocent casualties.

Yet there's no punishment for those who do..... seems a contradiction

Holding civilians in order to render a legitimate military target immune from attack.

About the use of palestinians civilians by the israeli army yes there is literally dozens of proof :

Never saw definite proof of that. But here you have a classroom of 10 years old boys in a religious school in israel. Totally not taught to hate and kill palestinians :

Nothing Hamas has done on October 7th compares to what Isarel has done and is doing in Gaza.
. Thousands of innocent men, women, and children (babies). IAF bombings of indiscriminate targets.
. Palestinian refuges in the south of Gaza without food, water, medicine, and electricity.
. 3 innocent Israeli hostages killed by the IDF.
. Now two innocent Chrisian women killed in cold blood inside a Catholic church in Gaza by the IDF.
So, to understand the Israeli mind for the atrocities of October 7th:
Kill innocent Palestinians, Isarely Jews, and now Catholics. What else is left to kill? Even those poor Palestinians donkeys have been killed by the hundreds. No mercy, no regrets, no empathy or compassion. The holocaust did not teach anything but hate and payback.

The IAF is killing hundreds of my four legged friends. I rescue, save, and raise donkeys.
Very sweet animals and a sad casualty of this conflict.

General Herzi Halevi was speaking to troops in the wake of the accidental killing of three Israeli hostages in Gaza by soldiers on Friday.

He told soldiers to "take two seconds" if they see people "who do not threaten you, who don’t have weapons, who have their hands up".

Halevi stressed that even enemy fighters, if they put down their weapons and raise their hands, must be taken prisoner, not shot.

Interesting development, any idea why the IDF are suddenly talking about operating like a normal army?
