Guess how much UFC fighters can bench press?

To be fair, they don't just lift. They have to get cardio in as well.

A lot of fighters will tell you that focusing on lifting only hurts you

I know some fighters who never touch a barbell
Theres also fighters who don't run it's not necessary but beneficial.
Being strong is a good trait for fighting, weights is just one tool, not the only tool

Fighters at MW and above who bench under 300lbs should be cut from the UFC for F level athleticism.

It's harder to do a shoulder press because there's less muscles involved and the delts are much smaller than the lats and chest
There's no way it's more functional both are good lifts.
A clean to press I agree is more functional but not Just a millitary press
Yes my mistake. I meant clean to press. I forgot the name. That is top notch. Definitely one of the best functional exercises. Also just picking up 2 heavy dumbbells and walking across the room for 20 yards back and forth is awesome for power and developing strength.

Hey T.S theres this site called bodybuilding.com they have a forum there you should check it out and post shit like this there ..instead of posting a wasteland thread on sherdog that has nothing to do with MMA..

Like bench is neat and all, but you are not seeing big bench numbers because they just don't have the benefit you can get from other compound exercises, like squats and deadlifts.

You see all the elite bjj guys in mma with small chests because the range of motion used is different than the bench press. Pretty much all techniques is being used there. In punching it has long been known that legs and hips contribute the most to power so if you do lift at all, it will be the lower body lifts to facilitate the ability to work harder on the bag. GGG chest is small but he's considered a powerful puncher for his weight.

Overall, MMA follow what they should be doing. Focus less on lifts and focus the majority of your time on technique and bag work. With juice you can pull it off, but you only have so much time and energy in a day to work what you need to.

100%. I have a question though. What sort of gym related exercise could possibly emulate a takedown like motion? Basically something the replicates a wrestling move to take someone down. Prowler sled push is something i have used and its fantastic. But i want something more specific.
Sandbag maybe? I havent tried that yet but i really want to know if it helps.

Like GSP, I bench for the ladies...

...as far as fighting, benching slows down dat left hand.

A boxing coach once told me that doing heavy chest presses inhibits your speed in terms of your ability to land a punch. Dont flame me. Thats what a boxing coach said and he is pretty elite. Dude coached guys at a national level.

I agree with shortlefthook's theory though. Having bench strength isnt a drawback at all. Why would you want bitch tits. In my opinion though, you dont need to focus on it. Its more of an ancillary benefit to a fighter.

Maybe its different for each guy.

Tyson did push ups, don't think he did much weights.

But then you look at guys like Ken Norton and well, his pecs didn't stop him from beating Ali.

I feel like the tire flip definitely helps to improve drive, the sled is very good too.

Overall drilling is king though shooting Takedowns on a live body is best, but the tire flip is a great tool to help get stronger in a way that will indirectly help the movement.

I'm a powerlifting competitor so I know Cro Cop had a few training sessions with Srele Brutal Team powerlifting club in Croatia and he benched 170kg (375) touch and go (with no pause on chest, but touching the chest with the bar.
In powerlifting circles that is not impressive for his bodyweight, but being a fighter it's certanly good.

An elite bench would be 2 x bw bench RAW and more.

Good post...

Agree.

I'm nearly 40 years old and work in an office. 5'10" and 186 lbs. Last night I hit the following: 135 x 50, 185 x 35 (felt like I could have done a whole lot more), 205 x 20, 245 x 12, 275 x 6, 315 x 3 (spot on my very last rep)... Not the heaviest lifts... but... VOLUME!

Not an UFC fighter but polish olympic weight lifting gold medallist szymon kolecki, started with MMA around a year ago and is 5:0 now.
Allthough he is just fighting bums, his fights are quite entertaining. Seems to be a workhorse and it looks like he made the transition to MMA with the right mindset. A shame that he didn't made it a few years earlier.

Stipe - 315
DC - 330
Ngannou - 405
Overeem - 330
Lewis - 365
Yoel - 315
Rockhold - 275
Bones - 295
Tank Abbot - 550

I would be shocked if Overeem couldn't bench significantly more than that (at least when he was Ubereem). I'd estimate him at 500+. My 43 year old buddy who's less than 220 lbs benches 495 x 7 (although he is an accomplished power lifter).

trust me, I don't believe it too. Look through his training montages on YouTube and you'll find it
There are countless of videos. You'll have to find it.
