Greatest boxer ever?

Yeah, he was doing hard labour at a young age, no doubt, and even before he went down to New Hampshire to work the farm, he spent some time working in the logging industry while still in Nova Scotia and may not have even been thirteen yet when doing so.

He was a little tank, that's for sure, although as he matured and when he was in decent shape, he was really not much more than a middleweight or a small light heavyweight. Once he hit heavyweight in his poundage, he was enjoying the good life a little too much, and was basically described as being, well...fat. Still had the punch to level anybody, though, obviously.

lol, i've seen those pics too!! yeah, he had enough of a punch to scare the living shit out of jack dempsey (even though dempsey had already drawn the "color" line...)

I know I can level anyone with my punch...

Not me.

I had some really quick hands in my younger days, and even at my age now, I still think they're pretty quick. Never had that much power behind them, though, although I did score what was literally a two punch (jab, right hand) stoppage in my ammy days. That was entirely an aberration, though, as any other stoppage wins I got (not many) were due to overwhelming a guy with speed, accuracy and volume.

Well...I think I'll let Mr. Bradley handle that one if he so wishes, with him being such a huge Dempsey fan and all.

I would give Dempsey a break on that Langford situation myself.

well i know i couldn't level anyone, but i knew even as a kid i had power in my punches that alot of guys didn't have. i grew up playing baseball (pitcher & outfield) and could really throw hard and fast. i lost my temper pretty bad when i was 14 and gave my neighbor at the time a fairly serious concussion. after that was therapy and boxing. i was a natural right-hander, but, after alot of repetition, i developed a pretty fierce left hook. i have found over the years that bodypunching is far superior to straight head-hunting. some guys (no matter how hard you can hit) can take head punches all day long, but well placed bodyshots is a different story...

i'm a fan of dempsey too, but didn't he say himself, "sam probably would have killed me."?

Anyone who put floyd prissyboy maywether on that list is a retard and should be violently attacked by rabid spider monkeys. Notice I didn't even capitalize his name? That's cause by modern English, its improper to give any credit to that puss-loc.

ray robinson
henry armstrong
ali
joe louis
hagler
leonard
sweet p
just to name a few

i'm only 19. i've watched his fights on ESPN Classics, i've seens tapes of his fights. I've seen him fight, he is the only HW boxing champ to retire undefeated. He won 44 of 49 fights by Knock Out, thats a 88% knockout rate.

The guy was good, i think he beats any HW fighter from any era in their primes. I think he beats Tyson, Ali, Frazier, Liston, Louis, Foreman, ect...ect...ect..

your crazy, i like marciano but most of the guys you named would beat him, he beat louis when he was washed up

Tyson would be too fast and powerful for the rock, and Foreman would probably kill him. Ali would make him look like a club fighter, you can't hit what you can't touch. Oh, and don't even mention the Louis fight. Joe Louis was 100 years old when they fought.

Armstrong, the 126 pound division world champion, challenged a fellow member of the three division champions' club, Barney Ross, then world Welterweight champion, for the title. Armstrong, 126, beat Ross, 147, by unanimous decision, adding the world Welterweight championship to his Featherweight belt. Then, he went down in weight, and challenged world Lightweight champion Lou Ambers. In a history making night, Armstrong became the first boxer ever to have world championships in three different divisions at the same time, by beating Ambers on points.

If whoever wrote this part considers Barney Ross a three division champion then that statement in regards to Armstrong being the "first ever" to hold three seperate championships in three divisions makes no sense at all, and is, in fact, inaccurate.

other canidates r.
Joe Louis
Sugar Ray Robinson
Sugar Ray Lenard
Marvin Hagler
Tommy Hearns
Pernell Whitaker.
I think tha best of all time is Ali & Ray Robinson. Hagler might come in 3rd or 4th, cauz he was a beast... One of my favorites.

Great fighters, agreed. But, Ali was the greatest of all time. Even when his youth and skills went south on him he was still able to win on experience. Who lets a young brute like George Foreman use him like a punching bag until he's tired himself out? Knocked out Sonny Liston! Made Sonny Liston quit on him in their first fight! Sonny Liston was a convict the guards had to beat into submission with baseball bats. A mob arm breaker. The young Cassisus Clay beat him twice by BOXING the brute, not fighting him. Seemed Ali only rose to the level he had to to win a fight. When he fought the Foreman's & Fraziers he rose above. Nothing against Marciano & Armstrong. Great fighters. Rocky was brutal. But, no slam on Rocky, he did fight Louis, Walcott and Moore when they were past their prime. Great fighters all. But Ali, in my humble opinion, was the greatest.

Sugar Ray Robinson is the greatest boxer ever. Muhamed Ali said so himself. Here is a nice video of the Sugar man doing his thing...
