Gene Rychlak bombs at the Olympia

Fuck him, he is one of the bastards who hleps make powerlifting a joke.
 
I heard Gene layed stayed on the bench for about 15 minutes and was taken out on a stretcher. He was admitted to the hospital but was released and is OK. Couldn't find any info on exactly what injuries he may have suffered.

I'm sure Gene knows how to wear his shirt but to me it looked like it wasn't evenly adjusted. It was a couple of inches lower on his right arm which is the side he dropped it.

Also, whoever the fuck that spotter was on the right side, fucked up big time. I pretty sure that was Mike Miller on the right and he spotted fine, but that guy on the left didn't keep his hand cupped. He took a hand away for a second and tried to lift it one handed. I can't believe Gene would let a guy like that spot him with that much weight.
 
I'm going to get slammed for saying this..
but bench shirts are fucking stupid. All these guys working thier ego's because they can put up massive numbers with 4 ply shirts should get their heads checked.

This guy is going to attempt 1500 and we're going to get to watch his forearms crumble.
 
This is the forbidden subject, to gear or not to gear. Benching with shirt is gaylordish.
 
I'm glad we all agree.

The only equipment I can understand is the old school single ply poly stuff that really was designed to help prevent delt and hip injuries.

I wouldn't say that we all agree.

A few years ago, when I first got into powerlifting I thought that the shirts were ridiculous too. Now, I'm not as oppossed to them. Since all of the major powerlifting feds allow them in some form, I see nothing wrong with someone wearing one.

I also don't get the argument that single plys are OK but mutli plys and denim or canvas crosses some magical line somehow.

Honestly, I would be happy if all feds banned shirts, and eventually that may happen. But for now, people are just playing by the rules of the games. Sprinters wear special shoes that make them faster, pole-vaulters have special poles, and swimmers wear full bodysuits -and that's all legal in their sports.


I know Gene's lift at the Olympia wasn't for a sanctioned meet or anything so their could be an argument to be made there, but I can't fault the guy for trying to make some cash in a sport where the top elite level guys are barely making a living.
 
Uh, you obviously have no experience with equipment if you don't understand the difference between old school single poly and double ply canvas/denim.

The way people originally wore Inzer Blast shirts, you got 5-10lbs out of them, now in a DD you can get 300+, or in an open back, multi-ply poly.

Another example is that whats single ply poly now is actually 5-7 plies laminated into one in some cases. No shit.

And I see something wrong with somebody wearing them, it cheapens the sport, ruins it's public appeal, and is all about ego and bullshit.

This is coming from a competitive powerlifter who trains in a gym full of gear monkeys.

The top raw BP by Mendy is maybe 700 pounds, i think. Rychlak was nowhere close. So 300+ pounds over the best raw bencher equals instant injury if you experience a "wardrobe malfunction"!

A guy on goheavy said Gene was notorious for faking injuries after missed lifts, I think it was JIm Parish. Not saying it's true, just saying it's be alleged by an ex training partner.
 
alright, I'll be up front and say I've never tried a bench shirt out and my knowledge comes from what I have read. That being said, I have a question as to how often those shirts do malfunction (blow out or rip). That could lead to very serious injury. Has it ever happened in a competition lift or has anyone ever heard of it happening?
 
Yeah, it happens constantly actually.

Pec tears from ribs

Broken ribs faces from misgrooved benches etc.

Shirts have actually made benching MORE dangerous now.
