Depends what you are waiting for. If you are waiting for a new generation, then that’s a bad idea. This generation of cards is a massive leap in performance. There’s no way the next gen jumps like this one. In fact, I think it will be five years or so before we see this jump again.

if you are just talking about waiting 3 or 4 or 5 months to see if they do a 3080 Ti or whatever, then maybe... I personally would like to see a 3080 with more memory

I'm on a 2080 Super, and while the 3080 is clearly a meaningful improvement I wouldn't mind holding out for an extra 10-20 percent or so before paying 700-800 again.

Do you think this gen of CPU's have made a similar leap in performance?

I haven't paid much attention to new hardware in the last few years so I'm trying to familiarize myself but with xmas and covid, prices and availability are all out of whack.

How is the Ryzen 5800X? What did you have previously and how much of a difference do you notice?

Sure, that's a great kit.

You and Wol are in the same boat. Neither Asus nor Gigabyte have provided an updated QVL list for Vermeer CPUs. After all the additional research I poured into reviews and online testimony about RAM for Vermeer the past few weeks I definitely think it's better to go with 4x8GB RAM sticks. This is better for performance, but it's especially true in Australia where there is a steep discount on the smaller sticks at the really high-end of performance, so you're getting more for your money. In a blind, without QVL lists, CAS16 3600MHz kits offer the best value with the best true latency that is also at a frequency nearest to the FCLK ceiling, but still most likely to run stably at this XMP profile.

Best options (better performance as you go down):
*$163 from Newegg. Just noting this because I'm not discriminating with the best prices quoted for the other kits via PCPP.


Above that and you start paying a steep premium for improvements to performance.

I'm not in any big hurry to get it yet but I did not consider 4x8GB RAM sticks. I do like the Crucial Ballistix kit but I might search for another kit that's more low profile if i'm gonna be taking up all the slots. I can just move my CPU fan up a bit but don't want to move it too much if I don't have to.

It's fantastic, I upgraded from a Ryzen 3700X. Generally everything feels snappier but the 3700X was a great chip and it wasn't necessarily a "needed" upgrade.

Fuck, it slipped my mind that almost no 3600MHz+ kits come without heat spreaders. Those Vengeance LPX kits I edited in are only 31mm tall, though. They should suffice for clearance, but you'd probably have to suffer the hassle of removing and reinstalling the CPU cooler. Such a bitch.

Very nice, thanks. I probably won't upgrade for a while but I have been looking at Ryzen for a change and specifically those two processors. Glad to hear they both perform well.

they proved that more ram sticks actually improves performance but I forget to what degree, it was maybe like 4% at the most? on ryzen's 5k series

I was under the impression anything higher then 3200mhz wouldn't net you any performance gains?
 
Anyone think right now is the worst time to buy a gaming laptop with the advent of the nvidia 3k series and radeons 6k series?

God no. You're thinking of Zen+. There was diminishing returns on performance gains in gaming above 3200MHz, and in particular the CAS14 3200MHz kits. Moreover, the premium in cost for any improvement above the CAS16 3200MHz kits for those CPUs at the time was exorbitant.

Totally different landscape with Zen 3, and the average market value relative to frequency/latency today.
