I was reading a cnet article (no idea their reputatiom) and they basically said it does not matter

If you're just watching television it doesn't matter. If you're gaming, it matters a lot.

HDMI 1.2 will do 4k 30p, 2.0 will do 4k 60p, and 2.1 will do 4k 100p+ (don't remember the actual number off the top of my head).
There's other things like Chroma subsampling and more audio channels supported

Interesting. Thank you.

Freesync is also supported only over HDMI 2.0+.

The Xbox One S and Xbox One X from the last generation support Freesync. All of the new consoles (PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S) support Freesync 2.0.

So I should grab a new cable with my ps5?

This depends on your TV/display. If it isn't Freesync, and if it doesn't support a native refresh rate above 30fps at 4K, then it doesn't matter.

What is it?

Alrighty, I will add it to the list. Luckily HDMI cables are not exactly expensive anymore. Computer + Monitor + PS5 is already going to set me back way too much this winter.
Monoprice specializes in this. They have a dozen lengths, and you can order 1-pack, 3-pack, or 5-pack. The 6ft 1-pack is the bestseller:

sweet, a whole 128 GB! that changes everything! 1 game per ssd. you guys wanted discless, now you have to change drives out in between each game.

hey man, I get hardware coming in all the time to test out. these particular 2242s/2230s are pretty damn cheap & are great for testing out brands instead of, you know, throwing down a lot more for 512gb+ cards.
