Tech Gaming Hardware discussion (& Hardware Sales) thread

I was originally aiming for the 3070, but I feel myself inching closer to the 3080 with my ultimate goal being 1440p 144hz. Right now I have a Xeon 1231, GTX 1070, and play on a 1080p 60hz monitor.

The setup I have in mind is basically:
  • Zen 3 CPU
  • 16 GB DDR4 3200
  • RTX 3080

I could also switch things around and go for an RTX 3070 paired with a 1440p 60hz monitor (or perhaps 4k 60?), but the 3080 1440p144 combo is so damned tempting, even if there are already several games bringing the 3080 well below 144 FPS.

What do you guys think will ultimately the best value between the two (even though we don't have any actual 3070 benchmarks to go by yet)? I'm really wanting a powerhouse that will crush games at 1440p for at least the next several years. I'm sure both cards are capable of kicking ass and taking names, but the 3070's lesser power and mere 8 GB VRAM (versus the 3080's 10 gigs of GDDR6X) worry me when it comes to the next 2-3 years.

Do you typically crank the settings all the way up?

Yeah, I'd prefer to play everything at 1440p Ultra for the next 2-3+ years, staying well above 60 FPS.
Then the 3070 will be fine. It would be either right above or right below the 2080 Ti here.

I'm sure that if you play around with your settings you'll be able to hit 144 on most games with a 3080. I've got a 2080 Super and 90+ at that resolution is pretty normal with lows around the 70s barring exceptions like Control where with RTX turned on the game can hit well below 60. Then there are games like Doom Eternal and 2016 where I can actually hit 144 with everything cranked up. Also if you get a Gsync/Gsync compatible monitor a 3080 will probably always keep a high enough frame rate that you won't even notice it drop because it'll almost always be around at least 100 fps.

I also expect Nvidia to keep trying to improve DLSS to leverage that against Radeon. Also, the reality is that some game will always come along that nukes the whole idea of max settings regardless of resolution, but it's just kinda fun to think about when buying cards.

So @Madmick with everything we know now, time to leave my 1080ti behind? or wait for Big Navi's announcement before making a choice?

I would say that unless you want a FE then you may as well wait to see what AMD is bringing to the table too. But what do I know? I’m just a filthy console peasant.

Get 32 GB ram, dude!

Fail.. everything sold out instantly (i actually never got option to add to cart on multiple websites..) Fuck this.
Same here.. I had even signed up for notifications but I never got any. I was ready and willing to give nvidia my money.. I guess they didn't want it.. oh well.

Let's see what happens with 3090.. I might be willing to splurge....

Figured I'd go ahead and try myself. Why the hell not? Closest I got was seeing a couple of add to cart buttons at least pop up on Bestbuy's website.

Where did they say that? it has bee known for weeks that 6am PST today was launch time.

I know now someone just posted that they claimed was on Nvidia website. If this is the case people are buying dozens at a time in the hope to making a quick buck on Ebay.

I'm guessing the 3090 will be even harder to come by because that's the card all the benchmark freaks are gonna want.

Pretty sure this was some BS fake release shit. No one at PC master race reddit could get one.

Nvidia swindled the hell out of everyone. I wonder how long it'll be before the cards are actually obtainable?

i mean, it was expected that supply would be super tight until 2021.

that said, i figured they'd have SOME for sale, at least. but now it looks like a paper launch to jebait amd re: pricing.

but i suspect people are exaggerating a bit.
