Aside from being "pretty good", what has Antonio Margarito done to deserve being in the ring with Floyd Mayweather?
I'll tell you exactly what would happen here - either Floyd never fights Margarito and he's "ducking" him, or Floyd fights him and beats him and all of a sudden Margarito is one of these guys that Floyd should have never fought and should have focused on (insert fighter here) instead.
Same with Paul Williams. Williams is a young fighter with talent and lots of potential, but he's got a lot to learn and needs to be more consistent before he's in the ring with the kingpin of ANY division. Again, if Floyd never fights him, he's "ducking" Paul Williams. If he fights him and beats him, he's fighting an unproven young fighter when he should have been fighting (insert fighter here) instead. And heaven forbid he loses, because then his entire body of work becomes void to the people that demanded he fight these guys in the first place.
It's a no win situation for Floyd. Either everybody he beats is going to be somebody he shouldn't have bothered with or he's ducking somebody. Whatever.
Mayweather 2001-2003 is as good as it get's, but as far as WW champions go, he doesn't rank anywhere in my book. I have no hate for a guy wanting to hang them up, but it certainly wasn't a "no-win" situation to begin with in the WW picture. Hell that's just crazy talk. If Mayweather HAD smashed up Margarito or Cotto, this conversation wouldn't be taking place. Even if he did lose it would be forgiveable and his previous body of work @ LW get's him into the HoF by itself.
When comparing oneself to the greatest fighters who ever lived, obviously perfection becomes prevalent. Let's be honest here, Mayweathers best work was done almost 5 years ago. Not last year, or when he won the Lineal Championship from a Journeyman who beat a mentally weak Zab Judah. People can say all they want that "They were the men to beat" and Floyd whooped um, but i never thought much of Baldomir or Judah as far champions are concerned, lineal or not. Zab defended his belt against Cosme Rivera and Baldomir against the ancient Gatti, then both dropped the belts and haven't won a meaningful fight since. WBO or not, at the time i felt Margarito's 5 or 6 title defenses outweighed Baldomir's upset over Judah. Then he opted to fight Judah anyways and stopped fighting WW's from that point forward until retirement.
