Floyd Mayweather Jr. retires?

Aside from being "pretty good", what has Antonio Margarito done to deserve being in the ring with Floyd Mayweather?

I'll tell you exactly what would happen here - either Floyd never fights Margarito and he's "ducking" him, or Floyd fights him and beats him and all of a sudden Margarito is one of these guys that Floyd should have never fought and should have focused on (insert fighter here) instead.

Same with Paul Williams. Williams is a young fighter with talent and lots of potential, but he's got a lot to learn and needs to be more consistent before he's in the ring with the kingpin of ANY division. Again, if Floyd never fights him, he's "ducking" Paul Williams. If he fights him and beats him, he's fighting an unproven young fighter when he should have been fighting (insert fighter here) instead. And heaven forbid he loses, because then his entire body of work becomes void to the people that demanded he fight these guys in the first place.

It's a no win situation for Floyd. Either everybody he beats is going to be somebody he shouldn't have bothered with or he's ducking somebody. Whatever.

Mayweather 2001-2003 is as good as it get's, but as far as WW champions go, he doesn't rank anywhere in my book. I have no hate for a guy wanting to hang them up, but it certainly wasn't a "no-win" situation to begin with in the WW picture. Hell that's just crazy talk. If Mayweather HAD smashed up Margarito or Cotto, this conversation wouldn't be taking place. Even if he did lose it would be forgiveable and his previous body of work @ LW get's him into the HoF by itself.

When comparing oneself to the greatest fighters who ever lived, obviously perfection becomes prevalent. Let's be honest here, Mayweathers best work was done almost 5 years ago. Not last year, or when he won the Lineal Championship from a Journeyman who beat a mentally weak Zab Judah. People can say all they want that "They were the men to beat" and Floyd whooped um, but i never thought much of Baldomir or Judah as far champions are concerned, lineal or not. Zab defended his belt against Cosme Rivera and Baldomir against the ancient Gatti, then both dropped the belts and haven't won a meaningful fight since. WBO or not, at the time i felt Margarito's 5 or 6 title defenses outweighed Baldomir's upset over Judah. Then he opted to fight Judah anyways and stopped fighting WW's from that point forward until retirement.

no thats the cop out, easy excuse you take for NOT fighting contenders who do well in your division. there is no excuse for not fighting contenders when you have the belt. none. no champion is sooo special that top contenders have to do anything but be top contenders to get in the ring with him.

Well said sir, I respect what FLoyd did at LW as well. But when he compares himself to Sugar Ray Robinson or people call him a p4p all time great is what irks me.

You all know I'm a huge Floyd fan...and it irked me as well.

I'm a Floyd fan as well and frankly, I think people overreact to shit like that. "OMG!! He compared himself to a fighter from the shadiest era in boxing promotion ever!"

Robinson was an incredible fighter for sure but Floyds a damn good fighter as well and hes pretty much the best of this era.

HAs he done enough to take Robinsons place in history? No but hes done enough to ensure his own place in history.

You know why Floyd can list himself as an all time pound for pound great? Because he was a legitimate belt holder in five weight classes and spent at least three years as the undisputed pound for pound best fighter on the planet.

For those people saying "Oh, we wouldn't say that Margarito/Cotto/Williams/Berto/Cintron/etc. were overrated if Floyd beat them" you're either a liar or you're dumb.

Ricky Hatton was going to swarm Floyd, pressure Floyd, work Floyd's body, and make him FIGHT, not just box his usual match. Floyd was going to fold when faced with this kind of fighter and Hatton was a step up for Mayweather and we were going to find out what Floyd was made of mentally and physically.

Floyd knocked Ricky Hatton out. OUT.

All of a sudden, Ricky Hatton is just a smaller man that Floyd elected to fight instead of facing one of his "real" challengers.

Amazing, no?

^^^

People mistakenly think that Floyds best days were his WW days.

So Mayweather is too special to actually compete against the top contenders in the the best weight class in boxing?

yes. they say so over and over again. floyds training tapes vs fighters = floyd UD. thats all it takes when you are so special. you dont even have to compete

you summed up why it irked me with your last line.
he has a place in history but its south of where he thinks it is.

He isn't the best 135 pounder of all-time let alone the greatest p4p of all-time.

he'll be back when he gets an itch

he's obviously not in love with boxing right now, but when he sees cotto tear things up, he'll be back.

I loved Floyd mayweather untill he cmae out with 50 cent in del hoya match persoanlly. Also i think the ufc annoucement may have to do with Mayeather coming to ufc, and thats why hes retired from boxing. Ufc would pay alot of money so they could have professional boxeer in cage, instead of some streetfigher headling and pulling viewers like elite xc.

Pretty sure that announcement has happened bro and mayweather wasn't part of it. Correct me if im wrong.

He will be back when he inevitably runs out of money.

sure in the couple of lifetimes it will take to blow through 100 million dollars.

you do know, off of interest alone he gets about 5-7mil, and he's probably investing wisely, so he's getting alot more than that, maybe up over 12 percent

you guys are ridiculous.

There's 2 things that could be going on with Necro in this thread.

1.)You been spending too much time in the HW's.
2.)You've been teaching special eduation classes and discussing boxing with them.

For those people saying "Oh, we wouldn't say that Margarito/Cotto/Williams/Berto/Cintron/etc. were overrated if Floyd beat them" you're either a liar or you're dumb.

So if the top fighters in the deepest and most talent rich division in boxing loses to Floyd, the p4p king, then everyone's going to say the ENTIRE division was overrated to begin with?!

All the hype. Floyd Mayweather Sr., Big Show versus Mayweather, Forbes versus De La Hoya, Floyd improving on a Split Decision performance.

I don't care if Floyd was ducking Cotto. You can run but you can't hide. He was going to have to face Cotto eventually.

We lose out on Mayweather soap opera, Floyd losing and putting somebody over, more events on HBO.

Who is HBO going to do 24/7 for? Pavlik, De La Hoya, Cotto, Calzaghe, Pac-man, RJJ?

No, I'm saying that people are going to find fault with whoever Floyd fights and beats, no matter who it is. They're not going to be happy until he loses, and then when he loses, they'll say he was overrated all along.

They'll be wrong.
