Dequan Townsend comes to mind -- dude fought hard on the regional circuits for years, his son passes away, and he finally gets a call from the UFC but it's on like 4 day's notice against a dude a couple weight classes bigger than him (at least one) -- he loses a tough fight and then gets caught for drugs (recreational) before losing to Bevon Lewis. I'm hoping he can pull it together. He didn't show much in his last fight, but I'm pulling for a comeback story.

• Fed to Connor
• Fed to Cody
• Wins via headkick
• Fed to Jimmie Rivera
• Cut - he deserved a little something after that murderers row

Ken Shamwow

• Got old before the money came
• Humiliated constantly by Tito, virtually destroying his legacy
• Too proud to know when to quit fighting/personal battles
• A true pioneer, now in debt doing security for Fiddy Cent

Tim Sylvia

• Pioneer that gets zero respect
• Burned bridges with The UFC
• Lost high profile fights spectacularly outside of the UFC
• Got depressed
• Now looks like he does in the pic above

Cat Zigano

• Husband/coach killed himself
• Loses to Ronda after rushing in (in retrospect would have likely won if she'd kept distance and struck)
• Beat Amanda Nunes before it meant something
• Never got over her demons
• Eye injury vs Megan Anderson
• Retired broke

Jake Shields

• Reputation and legacy destroyed by UFC slander
• Atrocious cut from UFC
• Arm almost torn off vs Palhares
• Forgotten (He was really good)

Honorable mentions to Stitch Duram, Mike Goldberg, and the Zuffa Gladiator...



Who you got?

That's a good list -- I believe Sylvia and Shields are 2 of the most underappreciated fighters in the sport. Their accomplishments are tough to ignore. People just hated Shields for his winning formula because they found it boring and Sylvia was just the ugly duckling (figuratively speaking) that always seemed to say things the fans didn't like (also got popped for a PED that was likely more for aesthetics than performance), despite being a generally respectful person with a hell of a backstory of abuse and being bullied during his upbringing. Both are doing well for themselves these days, thankfully.

I don't know Tony personally, but he's definitely one of those dudes that makes me worry. He had some seemingly pretty legitimate mental health concerns and a lot of people were worried about him. In response to persons' concerns, he seemed almost upset with people (publicly at least) for showing that they cared. I'm a big fan of his inside and outside of competition -- I just hope he's okay mentally.

Not only his mental health which does seem concerning at times, but the man won the interim LW belt, tripped over a fucking cord doing a UFC mandated media appearance and ripped apart his knee, was stripped of the interim belt cause of this injury, inexplicably had to win two more fights before getting another title shot... I like Khabib too, but for these reasons I'm rooting for Tony in April.

Gray Maynard. He was so close to become a champ, not once but twice, probably a punch away in both fights, but it wasn’t meant to be.

When he was rewatching the first fight all alone in his kitchen in the countdown for the second fight, realizing how close he was, and then losing the second fight after he was probably even closer than the first...
