Boxing used to have a LITTLE more dignity as an upstart Sport. Theres no central leadership (which Dana White has always hated and fantasized about ascending himself to that role), but during Apartheid pretty much all the major authorities in the Sport froze out South African fighters, who were all white because of course they were. Boxing felt the effects of being segregated during the mob days. I just did a class for a Homeschool Co-op here in Vegas as a guest speaker and because I wanted to show them boxers are more than dumb jocks, I went over a lot of the cultural movements that boxing effected, or where fighters played a huge role. From Tom Molineux being a legendary fighter while still being a slave, to Jack Johnson getting laws passed in the US barring taking films across State Lines because white people didnt want the film of him knocking out white fighters to be seen Nationwide (we studied this law in Film School, but not its origin). From Joe Louis being taxed on all the money he donated back to the US Military during WWII and dying broke after FDR said America needed his muscles to build Hitler, to Ali refusing to fight in Vietnam and openly criticizing white America on National Television.

Unfortunately nowadays, it's mostly just fighters and Coaches who want money. So they happily fight in places slavery still exists or will take pay from a corporation who would see fighters further exploited like Dana's venture. It's a result of the effects of Capitalism, its more difficult to get funding on the base level of many Sports, the wealth is concentrated at the top.
