Yeah, I was under the impression that there were certain documents that weren't supposed to leave highly secured rooms or whatever and that simple possession would constitute a crime, but it appears via majority that I'm either wrong or maybe the documents in biden/pence's cases weren't of that level. Fair enough.

A big part of the leeway here is that it's an ocean of documents. It's not a big deal for a former president to just end up having something, so long as it isn't shared or abused in some way, and that they _give it the fuck back_ when asked

Not the raid in Mar A Lago, Trump was the first to break that story actually IIRC.
You’re probably thinking of the raid on Roger Stone, and CNN was just sort of staking him out because there was enough smoke around Mueller’s actions regarding Stone that it seemed clear he was about to be arrested. I don’t think anyone ever tipped them off.

They asked Trump for the documents
Trump gives the feds some classified documents but not all
The feds know he has more so they issue a subpoena
Trump tells his lawyers (and this is a quote): “Wouldn’t it be better if we just told them we don’t have anything here?”
Trump had one of his lawyers (who had not actually looked at his documents) send a certified letter to the government stating all classified documents were returned (spoiler: they were not)
His other (smarter) lawyers advise him that he would be committing a crime if he didn't comply the subpoena
Trump decides to hide over 100 classified documents anyway and has his staff move the documents (which he does over text message because he's an idiot but we've since learned that you don't have to be a smart criminal when 50 million dumbasses will support you regardless of what you do)
Feds get a search warrant and raid Mar-a-lago. They find over 100 classified documents

Now lets look at Biden

The feds are unaware that Biden has any classified documents
Biden, on his own accord, asks his lawyers to review his documents
His lawyers find classified documents and immediately alert the feds
The feds ask Biden if they can have a look for themselves
Biden agrees and the feds find additional documents
No subpoena needed, no raid necessary, full compliance

If you think these two situations are the same then you have some serious cognitive issues. Had Trump simply complied, he would not have been charged.
