I vaguely remember that but somehow forgot. In fairness I saw the movie on video as a kid after it won all the awards and what struck me was how Mozart was portrayed as a young playful guy and not some old "get off my lawn" type that I imagined all classical composers to be like. I do think his character was necessary for Salieri's to work, kind of like how Seinfeld needed to vibe off George and Kramer's schenanigans for his straight man schtick to work.

At a minimum, Hulce's portrayal almost certainly inspired this reimagined portrayal by Falco in the (also awesome) music video that dropped the following year in 1985.

I always wondered if that song would have been a hit without the movie.

If you check reviews on Hulce's performance, I don't think the critics and I really doubt the classical crowd appreciated how Mozart was portrayed but I'm sure there was some truth to it. It's probably one of the those performances that's seen more favorably in hindsight. Hulce didn't seem to do much career wise after that one. Abraham has always been in stuff but I don't think he's been in super popular stuff either but I really doubt he had to play guys like the drug dealer in Scarface anymore. One thing for sure, you can always tell a well trained actor, Abraham is one.

It's a really catchy tune and I'm sure it would have done well, though almost certainly not quite as well without the movie. Amadeus won 8 Oscars and I remember these posters everywhere before the video showed up at Blockbuster.

Agree Abraham came off like a well-trained and seasoned actor. As an adult I'd appreciate his performance more than I did as a kid, when Hulce's over the top role was more memorable.

I read that the actual rock me singer was some sort of real prodigy, don't know any of his other music, I do know he died in an accident, think it was a car crash.

I gotta go with my boy Lou Diamond Phillips. One of the first movies I ever saw(or at remember seeing), that blew me away. I cried like a little girl at the end of that flick. It still holds up, too. Great performances all around, and it's a tidy little movie. Not GOAT territory, but it all just works. "La Bamba" is a banger in both mediums.

I put it side by side with "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story", in flawed masterpieces. There's just something about that period of film biographies that are just so watchable, no matter how many liberties they take. "Great Balls of Fire" is another one.

Did anyone besides Jamie Foxx actually play the instrument and sing ?

Jamie is a HIGH level musician. Prior to his comedy and acting career taking off, Jamie had started playing piano as a child, supposedly age 5, studied musical performance and composition in college. He is the real deal.

And he certainly didn't skimp or fall short on the nuances of capturing Ray's unique mannerisms, speech patterns, performance style and physical movement. He even met Ray and jammed with him to get Ray's blessing.

Lots of great performances to choose from, and i will freely admit bias as I myself am a piano player and deeply rooted in blues, jazz funk and motown giving me a bias and appreciation towards Ray Charles.

I covered several of his tunes over the years, Hit The Road being my go to opener/sound check becuase the call and response vocals in the chorus are perfect for dialing in the mix and the music is easy so you can adjust your sound without having to think too much about chords and shit.
I also absolutely love playing Shake Your Tail Feather. That song cracks and tends to get asses shaking on the dance floor.

I think the term "prodigy" gets thrown around too much but it sounds like the dude was a legit talented musician. "Rock Me Amadeus" is the only German language song to hit #1 on the U.S. billboard top 100. That's his biggest hit but I know he had other hits that were popular in Europe.

Genius does too but it's only what I heard.

Not sure about Jamie playing everything on the movie, I'm sure he could have though. I think he did all the singing.

I believe Jerry Lee Lewis is a better pianist than Ray. Dennis Quaid was said to have practiced for hours upon hours a day to play him, but his playing wasn't in the movie if what I read is correct. I did see a vid of Dennis playing and he actually could so the practicing part was true.

I've been watching vids of greg philinganes, that guy is a brilliant keyboardist, I fell so incompetent when I watch guys like that.

Did we ever do a "best movie/film band" poll? (Or some other way of wording it)

Seems like that'd be fun with Spinal Tap, Steel Dragon, the Lone Rangers, Dethklock, Blues Brothers ect... (yes I know some of those bands have albums)
