Not a lot of great black actors. Denzel is the best modern one I guess. I like Poitier. My first report in elementary school was on Poitier so got to see a lot of him when I was young and always stuck with me. But give me Danny Glover over all of them.
I mean, there are and could have been more, but the roles written for black actors in hollywoods peak eras were limited. Even Morgans role in Shawshank was intended for a white actor.

Denzel should have won for Malcolm X and that would have been my pick for #1 tbh.

Another one was Sam Jackson for Pulp Fiction. That role deserves a top 10 placement.

Denzel in Glory is exceptional. By far my favorite performances of his.

Just gonna say this. Any decent actor could have pulled off Denzel’s character in Training Day. It was a good movie with good characters that didn’t need outstanding actors to pull off. It’s not really a stretch to play a modern day bad cop compared to playing a biographical role, or a period character from the past.

People romanticize Training Day too much.

Yeah it's not a large demographic so it makes sense that there's not too many to pick from. I'm not a Malcolm X fan and never saw the film but I 100% agree with Jackson in Pulp Fiction. Great role.

I can only imagine that Monique's performance was one of the harder ones to conjure up. It seems like it would be easier imagine yourself as anything but an abusive parent and foul human.

Fucking double post.
Hate this format.

Malcolm X is in my opinion Denzels best role and the best for that year. He got mega robbed. Was a masterclass watching him go from a street hustler to convict to leader. He legit became Malcolm right down to his tonality.

I would have been ok with him winning if Pacino didn't get robbed in 74 for GF2

Denzel in Training Day is the obvious choice here.

But I actually voted for Jamie Foxx in Ray. Dude was nearly unrecognizable in that role.

Interesting how people view Whittaker. When young I enjoyed his movies like Ghost dog but watching more it's always near exact same performance. Him in the shield or with Jarmusch it's identical. Maybe he has movies that actually vary but imo he has close to zero range.

Denzel in Glory was amazing. But Halle Berry has been my favorite crush for a long time, and when she showed that juicy rump and tittays in Monsters Ball, a tear came to my eye. God bless that woman.

Yeah I might have to go back and give it a chance. I've never disliked anything he's done so couldn't hurt.
