Takayama

I've never been a huge fan of that fight.

Frye-Takayama was the Griffin-Bonnar of Pride. Two guys with minimal defensive skills just beating the holy hell out of each other.

If you are technique-snob, neither of those fights will do much for you, but if you enjoy watching a balls-to-the-wall scrap, both of those fights are awesome. I tend to lean more to the technique-snob side of things myself, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy a good old fashioned slobber-knocker every once in a while. Sakuraba-Newton is my favorite Pride fight, but Frye-Takayama is right up there.

Early Sakuraba fights, Pride 10, and Bushido Grand Prix '05.

Over the top entrances, stupid screaming announcing lady, try-hard fight posters that were basically poor high school art projects instead of fight posters, steroids, yakuza and some freak show fights.

Other than that, they had some truly magnificent fights. I would name some but in the 6 pages that preceded by post, I'm sure you've basically got a goldmine of fights.

Just go watch the higher resolution video of PRIDE DECADE from a thread on UG.

Over the top entrances, screaming pride lady, bizarre posters, steroids, and freak show fights is what made pride great except for the yakuza obviously. It's what separated the typical generic shit the UFC has nowadays.

Best just to watch every event from the start and watch the UFC events of the time interspersed in between, in chronological order - then you can gain an appreciation of the MMA scene at the time, which was vastly different to what it was today. I personally prefer the older days, the 'golden age' of the sport before it was "mainstream-ified" and made into a product.

Its cool you get to watch Pride for the first time, you have a lot of great viewing ahead.

LOL

Pot, kettle, black.

At least those other suggestions were for fights that actually happened.

Don Frye had a legendary fight with Yoshihiro TAKAYAMA, but never fought Yosihiro Akiyama.

Damn, feel a bit foolish, considering I've seen that fight multiple times now.

Agree with everyones list of fights but no sakuraba vs newton... smh

I don't see the similarities between those fights. As brawl oriented as Bonnar vs Griffin was it was on another level technically than Frye vs Takayama.

I like Griffin vs Bonnar but Takayama vs Frye I don't like. I think of Frye actually fought to his full skill he would have take Takayama out easy. But Frye was likely under some agreement just to throw hocky style arm punches.

It was a promotion run by professional wrestling bookers and had referee with ear pieces. ;)
