China will just use factories from another country or American companies will simply find another country to exploit cheap labor. I agree with some of the points, GOP is all about deregulation but not all the way. If company's think they will all stay in the same boat collectively passing the tariff funds to the consumer, I think they will be wrong. A company will break the stride and make their products in USA and sell if for cheaper. I think some sort of control reset should happen. I still think countries will chicken out and bend the knee and if not, we will see if Trump is a complete failure or not with this. I think its harder to predict then what people realize due to many moving pieces. And Trump is unpredictable.

He also tried this same thing with China last term, and it was a disaster. Why on earth would we think that is expanding that policy to encompass several countries would be good? This is correct. All trade wars and wars in general do is just consolidate power. Those companies that will drown under these tariffs will be bought by another corporation for pennies lowering the power of the American workforce (Mexican and Canadian as well). I think that's the point though because while the public argument is what have those countries done for us through all these years I think the true argument is how can we get workers to accept less and work more? Trump and Musk said these changes would be hurtful and cause pain but we all know who gets the pain of these tariffs.

I said at the time that the one bright side might be if we took it as sign we need to diversify our trade relationships. Hopefully, a second slap in the face will get people to wake up, and move their heads to avoid getting slapped a third time.

But the Dems are so fucking disconnected, they can't communicate why this is such a big deal on a broad scale--in layman's terms. They're stuck between this pandering to the every man schtick ("they're gonna jack up the price of your beer!") and sounding like pompous elites talking down on people.

Like...this really shouldn't be tough to sell to the American people as to why it's a massive overreach and bad for the economy. Trump's ego has given them a softball, and they're still (so far anyway) whiffing.

Did Canada agree to strengthen the border? Must have missed that. Ultimately I think meeting with them working on something is better than throwing tariffs within 3 weeks of presidency. Trump needs to be clear on what he is looking for in an agreement.
