It doesn't matter if we don't think a phone call is a big deal or not, it matters if China does, and it matters what they are going to do about it.

If they just get their feelings hurt and pout, good for Trump, I don't like the Chinese govt. anyway. But that would be seriously out of character for them, and I don't think anyone expects it.

I seriously hope he has considered what they are likely to do and what his next move is.
 
Didn't realize the president was restricted to only talk to people China is comfortable with.

They filed an official complaint. They whined about it. In other words, they did nothing.

These are the kinds of things America should not be afraid of. Going against the grain, and getting a stern talking to. Obviously there are limits to these situations, but there is nothing wrong with calling some minor bluffs to open up different dialogue paths.

If you're freaking out over a potentially offensive phone call, then how would you ever expect any kind of change to take place in the future?

Give me a break. The fact that China thinks it can dictate what nations the President-elect converses with is outrageous. They have become too accustomed to having a weak tit like Obama in office.

I think everyone is trying to make this a liberals vs. Trumpists thing, that's really not where I'm going. If Trump gets through this w/ Taiwan better off and no nasty consequences, good for him. If he thinks the Chinese are just going to cry and do nothing, I think he is naive.

Not sure what huge capitulation BO performed towards China.

I agree that so far, they've done nothing but I don't think it's over.

I don't think I'm freaking out, a lot of people don't understand that to China, this is a big deal and they are likely to take some retaliation unless they get an apology.

I don't understand criticism of the media reporting this, it is news.

We want China's cooperation w/ North Korea, who is developing missiles that could strike the US. They have been more cooperative in recent years, that may change. They periodically harass our ships or planes in the region, that may increase. They may harass US citizens in China or Chinese dissidents. There are always trade issues, as well. I'm not as good at thinking this stuff up as they are, though.
 
If he didn't accept the call MSM and progressives would have tried to paint it as racist/misogynistic

If they see this as a shift of US foreign policy towards recognizing an independent Taiwan then they can very well make this move. A phone call to Taiwan is not just a phone call when you're POTUS, Trump is way out of his league here and could put American lives in danger with stupid moves like this.
 
My first thought on reading this was Trump is serving notice he is going to reestablish diplomatic relations w/ Taiwan, which would make the Chinese pretty angry. On second thought, if he can play this as "I'm not the POTUS yet, just doing business here", then the Chinese might not make a big deal of it.

If they do make a big deal of it, it will be interesting to see if they wait until inauguration or not.

I'm vocally anti trump but I don't have much issue with this except that trump probably didn't even realize the problem.

Really we should be working with all world powers and not taking sides in internal conflicts. or simply making enemies based on ideological differences.

Having a neophyte as POTUS that doesn't understand foreign policy with nuclear powered nations... ya nothing to worry about. I'm still going to invest in Atlas though!
