The problem is that no one else really deserves a title shot right now. If not Gane, then who? Volkov vs Pereira? I’m not sure.
Yes, primarily because he is the measuring stick for the division.
The UFC needs someone to beat him handily so they can argue that some new HW is “potentially the best ever”.
The way Jon Jones walked through him will be a shadow over the division until someone does just as well.

Jon Jones knows how to play the game inside and outside the cage. At the end of the day people will only remember your record. Again I don't like him but he managed his career smartly. I used to think he was a coward for not rematching Gustafsson immediately but in hindsight, he was smart to wait until Gus was washed up.
Sure that's not the best warrior spirit there is, but that's definitely a page from Sun Tzu's Art of War.

Either Pereira or Volkov should get the next title shot. Assuming Aspinall vacates or is stripped of the title, the UFC should try for Pereira vs Volkov for the vacant HW title, assuming Pereira wants that fight.

GSP vacated the belt immediately and didn't hold up the division. Whereas Jon Jones held onto his belt and procrastinated for 8 months, and ultimately turned some of his own fans against him.

The hw division is lacking so hard in talent Cyril gane is literally the only top 5 caliber fighter in the division left...
We dont even know if Tom is top 5 level yet and imo he's not. And wasn't ever there yet.
Now you can all degrade the UFC hw division and have it full of Derek lewises and curtis blades... Not to hate on those guys but come on volkov blades theyve Ben the gate keepers to move in from the top 10.
Just being honest none of them had a chance vs stipe francis DC jones. Id rather see gane vs alex winner gets belt and that winner will be able to reign for a very long time in the easiest division especially if you can grapple exceptionally...

There is no UFC HW who deserves to fight for the title, so it doesn't really matter who fights for the UFC HW title next. Tell Paddy not to bother losing the weight he puts on out of camp and let him fight for it next. Or let Gane fight for it next. Or let them fight each other for an interim title. Or finally book Lesnar vs. Fedor. It's all the same.

I feel like it won't matter because a lot of people are just going to forget about it over time.
Tom's going to need to be some all time great for what happened with Jon to be remembered, so that he can keep being compared to Tom.
Doesn't really seem like that's going to happen.
