Who is into meditation here ? I think waking up in the morning while having an empty mind and a deep breath meditation and some calm music is the way to go, i always do it with a good glass of water to start the day fresh !

Are you into meditation sherdoggers ?

I have always thought meditation to be a lame and overhyped practice.
Why put yourself in a place where you need to conciously "empty" your mind?
Why waste time you could use to do so many good stuff?
Sleep, reading, exercise, going for a walk all beat meditation for me.

I don't do it as much as I'd like, but it's a calming process to de-stress

Doesn't have to be about emptying your mind, can be purely about breathing and resetting yourself

The whole thing is a misnomer, anyways the mind is not some fixed container that you can fill. Something that you cannot fully fill, how will you empty it? If meditation is anything, it is that blessed process that delivers you from untruth to truth. What is truth? It is that which works. That which works on the physical level, is the truth about the physical. That which works on the mental and emotional levels is the truth about those levels. Etc etc.

Sleeping, eating, exercise, and fucking beautiful women, having a kingdom, the Buddha went through all that and more. Then he went to learn all the different ways to meditate. Clearly there is something beyond that rubbish, otherwise he wouldn't have gone for it and spread Buddhism like wildfire.

So, what is it, if it's so obvious?
Also, my personal opinion, sorry if it offends you, is that any major religion is much more about politics and influence, than about "truth".

I love to meditate. I have 3 mantras and I use a mala. Om Mani Padme hum, Om and Sa ta na ma. The main thing it does for me and why I keep doing it, it allows me to think about issues in my life without emotion taking over. It's let me not get too high or low. its helped me breath much better. I can get down to 2 breaths per minute when chanting om. Im definitely able to stay more calm in everyday life situations. I've been pretty seriously meditating for about a year and off and on before then.

There are many many different meditation techniques. Emptying your mind is only one of them.
Saying it's a waste of time is kind of like saying intermittent fasting or eating salads are a waste of time when there's so much good food to eat. It can have health benefits. Or lifting is a waste of time when there's more fun stuff to do.
And ultimately meditation is about harnessing your mind in order to enjoy life more. It's a practice you do to strengthen your mind just as you would strengthen your body by going to the gym.

You don't even have to go into the esoteric spiritual stuff, it's been medically proven to have benefits. In fact some breathing techniques used in certain fields are a form of meditation. Like the sleeping technique taught in the military, or breathing techniques taught to soldiers/cops to calm themselves in high stress situations. Or breathing techniques to warm your body in the cold or prepare divers before they go in the water are basically all meditation techniques.

An easy taste of meditation, try this simple breathing technique. Nose only. Breath in for 4 seconds, hold it for 4, out for 4, hold for 4. repeat repeat. Box breathing.
It actually feel good after doing it for a while.

This helps if one's anxious, legit technique.

However, I don't count that as meditation. At least in the society in which I live breathing gymnastics and meditation are rather firmly separated and meditation is thought of as something about mindfulness and self reflection, optionally with mantras, aroma stics etc etc., not executing certain breathing patterns.

Hence my first answer in the thread, I feel sitting and reflecting on oneself is hella overrated. Can it be useful sometimes? Yes, sure. Should everyone do it daily? I strongly doubt that.

My meditation used to be going to the park and shooting hoops. In college I'd do it between classes. In my 20s I'd do it after work. These days my meditation is going for a long walk usually 30 minutes while listening to a podcast or Youtube video.

I only done it once. I took a hot yoga class and the lady with the green hair started saying money ram. I am too immature for yoga. I still giggle when people fart in class.

try to get over the label. And realize this is simple shit and it comes to this:

if breathing a certain way calms you down, then do that. If you eventually realize that saying a sound out loud while doing that breathing makes your mind stop racing, then do that. if you eventually realize that holding something in your hand while doing the other stuff makes you stop thinking about your issues at work or whatever is bothering you. Even if only for 5 minutes, then do that. There's value in all that.

Let meditation meet you where you are at. You don't need to do incense or ringing bowls or chanting . Or whatever labels you have about meditation.

Why label something and let that label stop you from trying different techniques

It sure the hell does. I do this all the time, while driving, while listening to others talk, while chanting om.

It doesn't matter what you or anyone else counts as meditation. It only matters how it makes you feel and that you do it.

Think of this stuff as techniques to make your self more calm or feel better. Like a self care thing.

Like stretching is good for you, but if you think stretching is yoga and yoga is girly or new age or hippy shit you may not do it. Fuck that, it's stretching while deep breathing .

Same with meditation. I never purposely self reflect on anything while meditating. It might happen but it's not my goal at all.

My only goal when actually sitting down with eyes closed is to focus on my breathing, focus on the sounds and vibrations my mantras make, and if thoughts come, trying to focus back on the breathing and sounds til the thoughts aren't there anymore. That's it and there's so much value in it.

Doing meditation is one step away from a cult leader trying to get in yr butt. No Alan Watts for me. No thank you.
