Mac n' cheese plus cubed spam was a normal meal when I grew up. Thinking about meals as a kid just brought back a funny memory when my Mom told me that pork tenderloin was elephant trunk!

SPAM is great.

I used to here and there,
But then I got old and it became to salty for me..
I used to love eating it wrapped in bacon and green chile

I usually get the lite or Turkey version because they have lower sodium.
When I was active duty I had a sailor working for me who was from Guam. He loved SPAM, but was embarrassed to buy it because of the "poor people food" stigma he found here. I used to reward his good work with cans of SPAM. true story.

Yes, junk mail was named after Spam. Spam was made from pork shoulder meat which wasn't a desirable meat like ham and bacon. It was developed for the military like much canned food. My dad said GIs were told it was spiced ham. It was one of the few meats that the armed forces got in World War II. The meat had to be canned to keep it from spoiling. There was Spam and chipped meats preserved in cream sauce, often referred to as shit on a shingle when served on toast.

After WWII, the government distributed the stockpiles to schools and Hormel sold it in stores as a very cheap meat. I remember around 1960 Spam came in packs of three and was often on sale. It could sit on a shelf forever so it was handy to keep around when a cheap meal was needed.
