Do you actually believe this was unintentional?

It's a technique that's taught on certain types of kicks. Are we really shocked a Muay Thai fighter uses a technique in Muay Thai?

Here's the thing: if you are an MMA fighter, and you cannot perform a technique---WHATEVER your background or style--without fouling...you don't use that technique. It's absolutely that simple.

Eye pokes are illegal. They are always going to be illegal, because the sport would not be sanctioned (and thus wouldn't really exist) if you try to allow eye pokes. So if you wanna be an MMA fighter, figure out how to do it WITHOUT poking your opponents eyes.

Is what I'm saying fucking controversial lmao???

No but the framing it as intentional rather than an accident is what I'm disputing.

I don't get it. Krav Maga teaches that you can eye gouge, throat chop, nut kick....are you saying kravmaga fighters cannot do that in MMA? How unfair!

I think he tried to push Aspinall but ended up gouging him instead. Just based on my observation.

Okay I get that, but in the end that's kind of irrelevant. Whether it's intentional or a fighter is just too inept not to do it...the result is the same.

All the front page has proven since Saturday is that MMA fans hate MMA fighters.
I think they hate their fan bases. If Jones was fighting and got poked like that, all the people defending Tom would be on the other side and probably even say Jones deserved it for all his eye pokes. Meanwhile, Jones fans would be defending him if he got fouled and quit during a fight. I only inserted Jones name instead of Gane because Gane doesn't appear to have that big a fan base on here. lol Hell, even Conor wouldn't have gotten so much hate if not for his fans.
Jones is a bit of an outlier I think. People seem to hate him on a personal level without even knowing him.

I personally think Tom quit but I don't dislike him and no matter what our opinion is, only he knows for sure. My opinion is just based on all the other fouls i've seen over the years that looked much worse and the fights continued. I don't care for Gane much. Just wanted to see a good fight.

A fair comparison would be championship fights, where the defending champion got fouled badly enough where it put them at a disadvantage.

I think if Tom was the challenger he would want to fight through it, since losing yields the same result as a NC, even if it is riskier. In this case he has nothing to gain by continuing.

I'm just surprised how few people are holding Gane accountable for the result, and instead piling up on Tom.

Exactly. If Gane can't execute a move without fouling, he needs to stop using that move, no matter how much he likes it.

It's like if a fighter can't low kick without hitting someone in the nuts, they need to stop low kicking. It's not rocket science.

Bingo

What a strange spot fighters get put in that actually fight fair. Fouls are essentially free until you accumulate a large, unspecified number of them. And you're expected to just fight through them without your opponent being penalized at all, or you're a pussy. With that logic everyone should cheat as much as possible, and always foul first.

I agree. It's an intentional habit he has developed with the aim of preventing his opponent from moving forward freely. He knows it can lead to eye pokes, but he does it because he's not penalized for it.

Forget about the fans, it's just dumb that there are fighters, and even Dana justifying this. They should be calling him out for this.

Mad respect to Jim Fuckin Miller for having the balls to come out and call bullshit.

The fighters are the ones who really SHOULD be using their voices to say "hey maybe let's not support cheating and possibly making people have fucked up eyes"

Instead we have morons like Chael Sonnen and Anthony "TurtleHeart" Smith telling stories about how tough they are for fighting thru some mild inconvenience in a fight which was not a title defense because neither of them ever had a title to defend.

Definite reminder that this sport we love is not depriving the world of a whole lot of brain surgeons.

I believe almost all fouls are intentional at this point. The UFC doesn't care on any real level about them. You can tell because Dana attacks the receiving fighter instead of the one that throws them.

100% with you on this! Fighters, and Dana should be reprimanding Gane's actions, not Tom's.

Intentional pokes like this have with very few fighters, because they don't get punished or called out by other professionals.

It's probably a reaction to hearing about Tom being the greatest fighter that ever lived for the last couple of years on forums like this one before he'd even won an actual title fight. I mean even Bisping proclaimed him to be MMA's Muhammad Ali. WTF?

That's why I think it's more a reaction to his fans hyping him up than to him personally. We all saw the poke and that's on Gane but people expected the greatest fighter to ever live to actually fight through adversity and again, we've all seen fouls that looked way worse than that and the fights continued. I grant you that none of us know what Tom was actually feeling. I don't think the hospital video did him any favors either. Plus all the talk of retiring or moving to boxing hasn't helped.

Im shocked this guy that his only meaningful strike in the Jones fight was a kick in the balls commited another foul.

And everyone is a tough guy and a badass when it comes to someone else's injuries.
It's hilarious how Tom and his fanbase are allowed to talk non-stop shit for 2 years and then when it comes back to them they start crying like a bitch. Weep.

Why can't we find some middle ground. You guys have to admit that Gane looked WAY better than people thought he would(most people thought it would be an aspinall first round finish) . Aspinalls vision was impaired. There will be a rematch.

Who is weeping?

This was a perfect result for me.
I would have missed the fight working on Saturday.

This was absolutely best case scenario for me.

I was surprised that Tom stood with Gane. Gane's standup is excellent and I figured Tom is way more well-rounded so would be doing everything to get the fight to the ground. He tried one half-hearted takedown that got stuffed and that was it. It made me wonder if Tom bought into Daddy's boxing talk as if Tom has world class boxing. Shades of Edmond coaching Rhonda.
