Gane used a Muay Thai technique to defend himself. He has a Muay Thai defensive style, framing out/long guarding with boxing gloves is a common tactic and clenching your fist all the time is one quick way to burn out and fatigue your shoulders.

Not intentional, could be remedy with a better glove design or they could neuter/dilute the sport more with more stupid rules that are impossible to enforce.
