Didn't Jones always intend to retire after Stipe?

Assuming they still think the fight is even possible, the UFC is generating incrementally more hits and buzz by teasing Jones fighting again than promoting no name #1 vs. no name #2 for the HW strap.

And Jones is certainly getting more followers, hits and sponsorships by keeping his name out there. McG showed how that works. For all we know, his russian reality show contract requires him to be the "reigning UFC HW champ" when the show airs, rather than the "retired" or "recently KTFOed" UFC champ.
Yeah that's the idea, but I dont see how it makes $$ in practice.

This fight business is also the show business. You need stars to perform. The show must go on and it has, with lousy/"watered down" cards, so talking about it generates.....what revenue?

Conor SHOULD come back cuz hes got legal issues constantly, bad actor, dropped from brands, and most importantly, doesnt fight. Talking about him fighting is nothing. Jones is almost exactly the same and oddly, less profitable.

Something else is going on

The last indication we had was after the Stipe fight. In the post fight interview he said...

"I have decided that maybe I won't retire, and I have some conversations to have with Dana and Hunter, and we have some negotiating to do, and if everything goes right, maybe we'll give you guys what you want to see"
Maybe. Another interpretation is that he "changed his mind" after the Stipe fight as in: he is now open to the negotiations to give the fans what they want to see in Jon vs Poatan. Because the last indication we have on Jon vs Tom is that he would never work with Tom in a way that makes him money.

So in that world, ever since Alex lost, he just changed his mind again and is functionally retired.

I mean, I agree and I don't like it either. But McG is a train wreck at this point and on top of being a rapist, he sucks at fighting now. For all his fuck ups, I don't think Jones has ever been accused of rape and as far as we know, he doesn't suck at fighting. Yet. So he probably still does OK with sponsorships and being UFC champ surely makes him a bigger deal at his local strip club.

Dana hasn't dropped the "he doesn't want to fight" line about Jones (meaning they made him an offer he won't accept) so either 1) he knows something we don't about the fight, or 2) they're inexplicably milking the situation knowing there's no Jon vs. Tom at the end of the tunnel. I just don't see #2 making any sense so I think there's still SOME hope the fight happens.

i forgot about his post fight speech. but he didn't say for sure if he would or not just that he might.
I recall he said he had more in him and he would consult with "uncle Dana"

I think he ran into the audience and shook trumps hand after that.

I think, deep down, JJ will fight Tom and defeat him. Gonna be tough, but yeah, I think JJ will have his final moment of Glory and beat Tom. Not that he would need that, but NY beating Tom, I think even haters would just recognize he is the best ever...
Jon better win if he ever ends up taking the fight. He prolonged this for so long that fans will crucifix him online even worse than they normally would if Jon loses.

I think Jones and Georges both wanted one and dones.

The UFC wanted more.

Georges straight up lied to UFC, said okay, while never planning to stay, and Jon decided to say maybe and stroke himself.

Now we're here, waiting for Jon to decided which of his demons he's going to listen to

Hope his retirement demon is gonna tell him to fuck off so we can move on from
him

That's also a good interpretation.

I honestly think this goes down in November at MSG. I think the biggest thing that will drive Jon to take this fight and continue fighting is money. He's got the biggest contract of his career now where he makes in one fight what he did in 3-5 fights on his prior deals. It's very hard to pass up fighting, when you know you're getting 7-10 million for your future.

I bet Jones is going to try a crucifix once he gets Aspinall down! With vertical elbows allowed, it's a good way to neutralize an arm and storm elbows

He's trolling Aspinall.

The truth is he's on another bender & can't decide if he wants to retire or fight Pereira.

Honestly, that would be a good move if he can pull it off. Aspinall is a big guy with a solid bjj background so I’d think he’d have the ability to get back up. The thing is he didn’t display that ability against Stuart Austin. That was a long time ago, though.

Jon Jones retiring just made front page of bleacher report. So In my head he's gone already.

I don't miss him

It was only 10 years ago, and he'd already had 3 pro fights prior to that one. I’m very confident nothing has changed and he probably hasn't improved at all in the past decade.

We see it all too often in mma where a fighter has a wrestling hole in their game that doesn’t change for the remainder of their career. Wonderboy, and Pettis are two good examples. Tom’s wrestling hasn’t been tested since. We won’t know until it’s tested again. Aspinall getting briefly taken down by that rugby player is why wrestling still may be an issue for Tom. Hopefully it’s not and we get a back and forth war.
