Did Costa Phillippou Get Lucky?

Tim wasnt himself after the first round.

I think he would have eventually ko Costa or win 30-27 if it wasnt of all those badlucks

I think it should've been a NC like Davis v Prado I. The headbutt and eyepoke were significant enough to hinder Tim and the broken hand made it too difficult for him to fight back and defend well. The latter problem is no reason for a NC, but it did explain why he looked so poorly in the later two rounds.

Well Costa looked like he felt sorry for Tim, he didn't even punch him properly when it finished, Winslow was just waiting for an excuse to stop that fight.

Shit happens but it's not like Tim was doing all that great before the broken hand and cut.

Actually thought he was doing great before broken hand. Not dominating but clearly winning the fight. Getting TD's rather easily when he timed them right.

Very lucky, and all the bad luck for Tim broke his will and spirit. That was just too much that added up.

They are great fighters and people, but man. What a shit day For Tim. He was obviously winning before the break.

I couldn't figure out if he came into the fight with the bum hand or he did it in the first. The way his corner spoke after rd 1 made me think it was preexisting.

Nah it's a fight. He got hurt during the fight and Costa capitalized.

everyone is just lucky - people would say that boetsch's current win streak is lucky - no one deserves credit for anything, its just all a fluke

I think Boetsch would win that matchup 6 or 7 times out of 10. I'd like to see a rematch.

same here.

Exactly. It's a joke that people make topics like this, but of course there within there rights. That's simply my opinion.

I expected Tim Boetsch (sp?) to run through Costa in this fight. Mainly because he is a big MW (used to fight at LHW) and he has fought and defeated the tougher competition in Lombard, Okami etc.

But Costa managed to get the victory via TKO. However, I couldn't help feel that he was kind of lucky to get this win. Here are my reasons:

1. Broken Hand:

Tim broke his right hand in the first round. Joe Rogan was commenting on this and it was clear he was hesitant in throwing his right hand in round 2 and 3.

2. The Clash of Heads:

At some point during the fight (round 1 or 2) both fighters clashed heads with each other and Tim came off the worst. The clash opened up a cut and the blood was flowing into his eyes making it very difficult for him to see.

3. The Eye Poke:

This annoys me, you're watching a good fight between two contenders and one of the fighters paws their hands out and pokes the other fighter right in the eye. Koscheck/Shields do it a lot, pawing your hand out with your fingers open ... should get points removed instantly for that shit.
But yeah, Tim Boetsch didn't really spend enough time recovering from that eye poke ... and was keen to get the fight started again despite not being able to see.

So, yeah Costa won the fight, but these factors make me think that this fight should have an asterisk next to it and given a rematch, I reckon Tim would handle Costa pretty comfortably.

Remove the eyepoking and the headbutting and boetsch would have had a chance to win even with the broken hand. Philippou was very lucky to not get a dq or no contest .
That was a barbarian screw up.

Tim quit, when a wrestler pulls guard like that he wants out, he was waiting for Costa to throw some big punchers so he could roll over and have the reff stop the fight.

He had a chance to quit in between rounds and carried on regardless of not being able to see properly.

Corner: Do you want to stop?
Tim, battered, bleeding and blind: Fuck no!

instant fan

Yeh that was boss shame the fight ended the way it did. Tim will bounce back though, whilst he may not be a world beater he's better than most give him credit for.

i think people just forget that fighters are human beings and not robots - sht happens and it doesnt mean you suck or are aewsome - there is just a lot of uncertainty in fighting and peoples expectations are too high

If you say Costa got lucky in this fight then I could say Tim got lucky in the Okami and Lombard fights. He was getting destroyed by Okami before he caught him and he beat Lombard by doing nothing.

Costa didn't fight dirty. The headbutt and eye poke were obviously unintentional. The broken hand was Tim's fault. Maybe if he learned to punch correctly he wouldn't break his hands.

That being said, I favor Boetsch in the rematch, no doubt.

Boetsch has been lucky as of late and his luck just ran out. He was getting dominated by Okami but landed a desporation punch in the third round, won a split decision against a injured Lombard that I thought he actually lost because he really did nothing in the fight and in the Costa fight he just didn't do anything that showed he was a top ten fighter.

People on here are making excuses for him but injury or not it wouldn't have made much of a difference, he had given up in the middle part of the second round. He started pulling gaurd in the third and was waiting for the fight to be stopped.

I like Boetsch but Saturday night showed that he wasn't a top level fighter.
