Deadlifts and milkshakes

Is there a purpose to conditioning? Yes, there is.

I know there is a purpose in general. But I am trying to focus on strength for an upcoming meet and I think it will hinder my progress. I'll just keep using the prowler. I don't think it affects my lifting.

Warmed up with a long walk trying to leash train this little shit ^^

Cute!

I leash trained my golden retriever by simply looping my end of his leash to my upper arm, above my bicep. That way, there is hardly any 'give'- as soon as the leash would get to it its fullest extent, he would basically need to pull my entire bodyweight, so he would stop really quickly. Holding the leash with your hand, there's a lot more give, because you can extend your arm, plus, once your arm and the leash are at full extension, it is quite hard to stop being pulled more. And the fact that he can tell that a bit more effort might allow him to go and sniff what he wants to sniff gives him encouragement to keep pulling. I figured this out because I noticed that when his leash is tied to a tree or a railing, he doesn't try to pull- as soon as he feels no give, he stops.

Thanks, he only looks cute though. He's actually a monster deep down. I think the reason why he pulls so much is because I wasn't strict in the beginning thinking that he would eventually just learn how to walk next to me. Now people say that stupid saying, "Are you walking him or is he walking you hardy har har" lol It drives me nuts, but he is getting better. I do notice that he doesn't pull on something stationary too, I never even realized that until now. Thanks for the tip!

I find something that also helps a bit is that, after he has been stopped by the lead, I call his name and pull him a bit. If/when he comes to me, I give him a bit of attention (in the past I would give him a snack but I am not sure how much difference it makes). I find for a little while after that, he is more focussed on me and less inclined to pull. It's setting up twin messages (1) You can't go where the lead won't let you go, and (2) Paying attention to the person holding the lead is a good thing. My golden retriever sort of forgets because I am away 6 weeks at a time, so I actually have to re-teach him a bit every time I come back, so we go through this at the beginning of every walk, but after 400m or so, he is usually fine and is walking along almost perfectly in step with a slack leash most of the time.

Ya know, I saw this technique on some dog training website and I tried it. It worked really well to get him to stop pulling for about 5 seconds but then he just started right back at it. He pulls so bad that his neck is missing hair where his collar is. I guess I just need to be more consistent.

I picked up the second one from a dog trainer. But I have to say that it is nowhere near effective as the 'lead around the arm' trick. The lead around the arm thing works really when on its own, but when you add the second, thing, it becomes even more effective.

I walk my dog with a pinch collar. I know a lot of people think it's cruel or painful to the dog, but if it's properly adjusted it's not. The idea is that a mother dog naturally corrects puppies by lightly pinching the scruff, and the collar mimics this. This way, if my dog sees a rabbit or squirrel or something, she's not choking herself against her collar, I'm not getting an impromptu pull workout.

same here, my dogs are almost 200lbs combined so pulling is not an option, i got a pair of these and they are the best walkers ever now. its self correcting too, you dont really have to do anything but hold the leash.

200 pounds??!?!? What kind of dog do you have?! I've thought about the pinch collar but I don't think it will stop him lol I mean, right now his neck is RAW from pulling. That can't be pleasant. I guess it's worth a try. I get so jealous when I see people with obedient dogs.

EDIT: just saw 200 combined...ignore me.

2 mile walk back home

Notes: I walked to the gym with high hopes for the deadlift today. Wanted to get 7 with 165, so I am disappointed that I didn't even get the prescribed reps. Still, 165 x 4 is a PR. I could have eeked out one more rep I assume but my back was rounding pretty bad on that fourth rep. Even 145 felt like a ton. I tried to think about why I felt so weak today and I remembered that I had taken a magnesium pill to get to sleep last night. Then I realized that there was another time where I made that observation about magnesium. Not sure if there's actually a correlation but it's the only thing that I can think of.

Also, I'm back in the 120's! There's something to be happy about.

My dog had a major issue with pulling as well. Have you tried a harness where the leash attaches in the front? This means that if they pull, it turns them sideways. It works really well for my dog because they hate being pulled sideways like that.

I actually just saw someone with a similar harness for their dog while hiking with him today. Seems like it would work. Since he's still a puppy, should I wait to buy a harness or are they adjustable as he grows?

Notes: I am trying to work on slowing down the eccentric part of my bench because as I watch a lot of my bench videos, I drop the bar down heavy on my chest and bounce it off. I know this is not good technique but I was instictively doing it I guess. The problem that I had today was that the slower I was going down, the slower it was going up which is obviously not what I want to do. Maybe I just have to get used to it.

Notes: I was aiming to get 5 with 65 for the press, which would have been a rep PR. I kept doing singles until I reached my prescribed reps. Bummed about my press, happy with my chins.

Now, I'm stuffing my face with steak fajita rice and beef then taking my beast into the woods for a 5 mile hike. Life could be worse.

Sorry, just saw this. No idea though.

No problemo, where have you been hiding these days Oblivian? Is your wife lifting at all?

Nope. We had our son in June and our dog has cancer now. We've been pretty busy due to that as we were driving her weekly for the cancer treatments. Other than that, same ol' shit. I don't expect my wife to get back into lifting. Her knees are all jacked and she prefers doing other cardio type things.

Aw, congrats on your son and sorry about the dog. Your wife will change her mind someday I'm sure!

: I need to swallow my pride and lower my maxes for all of the lifts. I've been failing every last work set for the past two weeks almost. I really don't want to do it, especially since I have a meet coming up and planned my schedule perfectly but failing every workout is not going to make me successful.

Notes: So flippin' excited about my bench. I haven't hit a 1 rep PR in a really, really long time. Probably a year so it feels good. I missed the first attempt because of form issues. As soon as I got my form down, the weight flew up. I think I'm good for 115 :D
