Deadlifts and milkshakes

I know there is a purpose in general. But I am trying to focus on strength for an upcoming meet and I think it will hinder my progress. I'll just keep using the prowler. I don't think it affects my lifting.

I realize I meant to elaborate on that comment long ago (because I believe the in value of conditioning more than most on this forum, it seems), but I never got around to it.

You are training for a meet! What sort of meet is this? Strength sports or grappling or otherwise?

I see a place for conditioning, just not part of my goal right now.

I am competing in Johnson City, NY in a deadlift/bench meet. It caught my eye over the summer and it has been a great motivator. I haven't been training long enough to do anything crazy but eventually I hope to participate more competitively and I think this will help me get accustomed to the "competition anxiety." I've decided to not cut any weight either so I am going to be competing against some strong ladies.

Bar x 5

55 x 5
65 x 1 x 15

Squats with the bar, just an experiment. Still hurts.

Notes: I ignored the 5/3/1 schedule for pressing. Felt like doing my own thing and got 15 singles with 65. They were easier than I thought. Hoping to hit 70 for a 1RM PR next press workout.

Did some half pull ups off a bench after the first one. First time I've ever done a full pull up before!

Good mornings
50 x 10
50 x 10
50 x 10

Ab wheel rollout
x 10
x 10

Notes: I was CRACKED out on caffeine for this workout. I felt great. Took really short rests between each set. This is my last day of 5/3/1 for the deadlift. New deadlift program starts next Monday. Here is a sample.

Week 1 145 x 15 sets x 1 rep
Week 2 155 x 12 sets x 1 rep
Week 3 165 x 10 sets x 1 rep
Week 4 185 x 8 sets x 1 rep
Week 5 195 x 6 sets x 1 rep
Week 6 225 (goal for the meet)

Any critiques? I got this idea from this article. The timing works perfectly for my meet.

1. Pull up PR! Good work.

2. Several people on here have run that program, and I did not read any complaints that I can remember.

Notes: Pretty happy with my bench PR. I know that I had 110 so I'm pissed that I couldn't stop being such a pussy and just do it. On the second rep, I felt solid but I didn't have any chalk and my left hand slipped. Afterwards, my shoulders were so pumped from the BBB that my arms were twitching even an hour after I had lifted.

I saw this a few days ago. Glad you decided to compete, and at an easy-to-make weight class, too. You'll do well.

Thanks Keosawa. I decided not to cut weight because after dieting for two weeks, I think I lost a pound in total. I just didn't see myself maintaining strength while losing weight so now I eat whatever the hell I want and focus on getting stronger. I've come to terms with the fact that I won't be the stronger girl in my weight class but as long as I come close to my goals, I'll be happy.

I might have to pick your brain when it comes closer to meet time. I really have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to picking attempts, how to warm up day of, etc.

My two favorite things too! (Obviously)

My comp is November 12th. About 6 weeks away. I am starting to wonder if I set my goals too high now that it is getting so close. I guess I'll just have to see how training goes.

ah ha....thats when my first comp is too, doing one here in TN. Just decided to do it 2 weeks ago so i might have bitten off more then i can chew, but ive just decided to compete in the weight class above my natural weight so i dont have to worry about losing 20 pounds in 7 weeks

This may help:

Your First Meet - The Sweat Pit

I still need to clean up the formatting on it.

thank you for this

Thanks! I just read that and i"m sure will keep reading it over the next few weeks. I need a lot of reminders of WHY I'm doing this and that it is just a learning experience. I'm assuming you wrote it?

BTW, I taped my power clean and plan on bugging you in the near future for a critique.

Ha, that's funny. Too bad it's not the same meet!

I hear ya on not cutting weight. I originally was thinking I was going to compete at 114...now I realize the insanity in that and don't care about my weight at all.

haha, that would be cool, get to root on a fellow sherdogger :)

yeah im like 219 right now, think i could easily make 198 if i didnt love junk food and hate conditioning so much. Just decided to say screw it and focus on my lifts. What do you think your attempts will be?

And sure, be happy to.

Deadlift attempts:
1)205
2)215
3)225

Bench attempts:
1)115
2)125
3)135

Those were my original goals, but I don't feel like they're attainable for me in 6 weeks. I might readjust. I don't know! I really feel like I need some guidance on my attempt goals.

is 135 and 225 your max? or are those both PR's for you?

if it was me i would space them out a little more....but what do i know? :)

edit: of course percentage wise if 135, 225 is your max then 205 is 90% and 115 is 85%....so mybe not, in my mind when i saw they were only 20lbs apart it didnt seem right

205 is my max for deads, and 105 is my max for bench although I know I can bench more than that. That's just what I've done. Maybe you're right. They are too close together.

If 205 is your max for deads, you certainly do not open with it. Particularly at your first meet. Your openers are 100% guaranteed to get you on the board. You should be able to make them in your sleep. During an earthquake. Underwater. On fire, if necessary.
