Deadlifts and milkshakes

BJJ (no-gi)

Skipped some classes the past few days and ate McDonald's instead. Let the guilt set in...now.

HUGE turnout today at the club today. Had 5 girls in total which is so incredibly awesome.

Long warm up - running, hip escapes, fireman drills, wheelbarrow, armbar from guard, triangle from guard.

A new girl came today who has been training at Tiger Schulman's or however you spell that. I didn't think it was possible, but she had a bit of a girl ego. Well deserved though, because she tapped all of us ladies. She passed my guard many times, mounted me, kept me in side control and tapped me three times. Pretty frustrating when I can't even tap a girl.

Second round was with a beginner and there were about four groups of people rolling on the same mat. Lousy instructor wasn't watching, someone got too close and nailed me in the head/ear with their foot. I lost my hearing for a few seconds and my breathing got really shallow. I almost fucking cried, you can't cry in jiu jitsu. I feel pretty down and frustrated. I am trying to keep jiu jitsu fun but today was just really hard! Progression is slow but I just gotta move on and learn from it.

You removed the video? Did you figure out what you were doing wrong?

EDIT: I lied, I guess I did delete it on accident.

I mean, I know what I'm doing wrong, I just don't know why it's happening or how to fix it. I've been doing some form work throughout the day like sitting in the Asian squat and what not, but not really sure what to do on squatting days. Lowering the weight and just getting under the bar more seems to be the most practical solution.

Wearing a belt isn't that much of a factor of the weight you use. If you up your belted squat, I'm sure you'd up your un-belted naturally as well. You're already doing core work, which might help.

The only other solution I can think of is using bands. Dieselcrew posted something up on how you can loop bands around your knees when you squat to teach you how to push out instead of having them cave in. Same with the bench, to teach you how to pull the bar apart. In your case, you can have it so that there is tension pulling you in the way you normally go in, so that you learn to push against that and correct it. Just an idea.

I say you should still get a belt.

Word, those are both really good suggestions. Do I use the bands only with BW squats or with weight on? Any chance you have the link to the bands suggestion or an easy way to find it?

From watching your 150 squat video, I think you should practice more rock bottom squats.

It may have something to do with your glutes not knowing how to activate properly yet.

Watch those squatrx videos on youtube and rework your form.

I'd work form first before starting to use other kinds of equipment.

Suck my balls! Do you have any idea how hard it is to supervise like 15 beginners?! 15 fucking spaztic beginners

I will NOT suck your balls. Do you know how hard it is to roll with 15 fucking spaStic beginners flailing their feet in your face?

In Dave Tates newest bench series he has an example of the bench one, its somewhere in the first 3. The band can be used with weight or bodyweight. You should probably use some weight though.

As far as a foot hitting you, be very cautious. Back when I did BJJ two guys were rolling hard and they literally rolled on my neck. I was bedridden for a couple days because I couldn't move and started training 2 months later. In a gym I've trained at if people were rolling close to each other someone like the instructor would stand in between them so stuff like this won't happen. You have to be very proactive. Watch yourself.

In an effort to clean up my squat, I found this thread on Sherdog and used some of the hip mobility exercises to warm up.

Contemplating on whether or not I should go to jiu jitsu tonight. I have a lot of homework and am really tired. Translation: I'm feelin lazy.

BJJ (no-gi)

Found some friends to carpool with and they ended up making me late. Missed warm ups.

Drilled the same techinque that I learned last class, shrimping out from side control, swinging outside leg on their leg and scissoring it to half guard.

Today, we learned how to hip scape out and use our far leg as a hook on the inside of their leg to create space.

I brought my friend who is a girl and fairly new to jiu jitsu and we just rolled with each other. I think we are good partners but a tad inhibiting because we didn't really roll with any guys.

We did three 5-minute rounds. First two rounds, neither of us tapped each other so I think we are a good match. She focuses too much on rubber guard though and it is frustrating to roll with her, because my neck gets so tired!

Last round, I really focused on passing her guard and getting in side control. I try my best never to pull guard anymore if I don't have to. Putting an emphasis on being more aggressive. Eventually tapped her with a keylock.

I stayed after for about an hour to watch my instructor and others roll during free mat time. sooooooooo cool.

BJJ (no-gi)

A whole practice dedicated to positional training. I worked with a beginner and a more advanced dude. I successsfully swept the beginner a bunch of times, but he could still sweep me. I improved my mount so much just from this exercise, keeping my hips lower. Second guy said he actually couldn't get me off his back, he was trying his hardest. I really worked it today and went 100%.

Rolling:
Man # 1 - it was his second class and he made a lot of mistakes that most people do that set up some really easy submissions for me like armbars and triangles. I attempted some triangles but had trouble breaking down his posture so I eventually armbarred him.

Man # 2 - Again, attempted some triangles with no success. This kid is pretty fluid with his jiu jitsu and is always a challenge for me. I reguarded him a few times and almost took his back. He eventually tapped me with an armbar.

Went right to the gym afterwards, all warmed up.
My knee must have been tweaked at last nights class because it was really achy, skipped squats.

Drilled the same escapes from side mount as we've been doing the past few days.

Pummeling for a dominant position, I am finally figuring out what the point of this drill is.

Rolling
Sunday is the more advanced day and everyone is pretty much bigger than me. I tried to pick the skinny kid but he seemed to get uncomfortable and walked away to find someone else:rolleyes:

Round 1: Tried to get the foot drag that we've been drilling but it wasn't working. Almost got him in a straight ankle lock but he wiggled out of it. Swept him (very slowly) once. He tapped me with a keylock.

Round 2: Was a skinny, blue belt. He told me I wasn't keeping my elbows tight enough against my body and he kept gift wrapping me.

Round 3: HUGE blue belt. He submitted me A LOT and threw me around. I learned a lot about the mistakes I make through him. Where NOT to put my arms when in his side control. He let me take his back, but quickly got my foot into some uncomfortabe position lol

I'm pretty beat from training 3 days in a row. Took a shower and passed out after todays class.

I enjoy reading your bjj posts, when I get consistant again I may start doing that. Keep up the training!

Glad someone is reading them!

[Boxing (basics)
First boxing class ever. I was kind of nervous and didn't know what to expect but my instructor assured me it was very beginner friendly. It was, but definitely difficult. First part of the class was practicing footwork - staying off your heels, keeping chin low, hands up. Then he pretended like he was "air traffic control" and directed us to move frontwards, backwards, left, right and would change it quickly to emphasize that we shouldn't cross our feet.

Then we practiced ducking and swaying side to side. It was pretty difficult to do that while keeping the footwork and keeping my head synchronized. We partnered up and had to practice ducking or swaying from jabs from your partner. I took a few hits to the face because I was thinking too much and had some trouble.

3 minutes hitting a dummy as hard as I can with jabs, uppercuts and hooks. Pretty exhausting.

Intervals of push ups/crunches

BJJ (no-gi)

Pummeling/footwork
Escape from side control, pushing with an underhook and pushing off your feet to get up, then pulling their knee and foot to pull them down.

Side control drills
Three guys lined up and were put in side control. We all rotated and whoever won stayed in. I worked an arm triangle on a guy who let me get it. Cool, new submission that I never knew how to do.

Rolling
Round 1: An up and coming MMA fighter. Pretty agressive, even with me. He submitted me with 10 seconds lol He gave me a few pointers on how to keep down his posture when trying to triangle. All things I knew but just forget to do in the heat of the moment.

Round 2: New guy. I arm dragged him and jumped on his back. Stayed on his back for the entire fight. He had no idea what he was doing and he would just keep giving me his back. I tried to choke him but he was trying pretty hard to keep my hands away from his neck. I need to remember to be more aggressive about staying on peoples backs, not giving up my hooks.

Boxing/BJJ back to back is INTENSE! I'm tired. Taking a break from training tomorrow.

That's not air traffic control, that's marshaling. Air traffic controllers are not the people on the ramp with the stupid orange lights.

I don't like your boxing coach. I think you should quit immediately.

hahahaha...my boxing coach is awesome! But I'll be sure to correct his terminology next time

Notes: Shoulders were exhausted from boxing. I don't think I'm overtrained yet but if I keep this up, I am going to need to make some adjustments to my lifting schedule. Haven't figured it out yet.

Yoga - 1 hour
I have become insanely flexible from jiu jitsu and yoga was a lot easier than it used to be but I still am a little wobby from having weak stability muscles. My ass was on fiahh. Definitely a lot of hip tension as usual.

BJJ
BIG fucking class. About 20 people were there today. REAL basic instruction bc of all the newbies. Breaking the guard, passing, kimura. With such good timing for beginner stuff because I am fried. We didn't roll and just worked positional stuff. There are five girls that go to the club now which is sooooo awesome. I really need to work on keeping my hips low when mounting someone, I get swept by these tiny, new people all the time because of silly mistakes.

Also, had a small epiphany. There's the tiger schulman's chick that's been coming regularly and she's a lot stronger and more technical than me and too often I am comparing myself to other people and their progress vs. mine. Today, I worked solely to improve MYSELF. As long as I perform better, stronger than last time, it doesn't matter how the other person is doing. I feel like sometimes I am TOO competitive and need to tone it down in order to get better. /cheesiness.

BJJ (no-gi)

Drilled escapes from mount. Pushing off the hips, shrimping out, scissoring legs to get half guard/butterfly guard. So excited about todays session because I knew very few escapes from mount.

Positional training - one person works on escaping mount, opponent works on submissions from mount. I've really been working on keeping my forearms glued to my chest so I can stop getting arm triangled, and that didn't happen once today. Yay for progress.

Rolling

Round 1 - I've been training with a friend of mine who is almost the exact same weight/experience as me. She's very timid and only works with the rubber guard. Very frustrating to constantly have my head pulled down for no reason but I stayed out of it for the most part. Two instructors have told her to stop doing rubber guard completley because it is definitely inhibiting her from learning other things. Anyways, neither of us really taps each other anymore. I really feel like I should be doing better against her.

Round 2 - Rolled with another friend. Aggressively went for some unsuccessful takedowns, but I'm getting better about putting all my heart into them. Got him in a legitimate guillotine and I was choking him, but he kept frantically shoving his forearm in my throat until I got really tired and he got out. He then felt the need to tell me, "I was just going easy on you to be fair." I'm really tired of this shit.

Round 3 - Blue belt. Let me take his back, work for a choke. Got one of the sweeps that we learned in class. COoooool

Stayed after class and learned a new take down - knee pinch? I think.
And a sweep from butterfly guard. My instructor Karl is so patient and helpful. Most people get annoyed trying to teach me something but he is AWESOME.

Hip/knee hurts. Gonna ice it and hope it feels better for tomorrows practice.

Edit: iced it for 5ish minutes, did some PVC rolling on hip/glutes for 20 minutes. Longest I've ever stayed on it, going to try to continue this everyday.

Positional training from half guard, learned some sweeps

Rolling starting from half guard, then switching with your opponent. Girl that I trained with last year dominated me and other girl.

Rolling starting from having the back. Realized this is going to be my objective, I am naturally good at it. Been choking people and keeping good pressure.

Alternated rolling with the two girls. Briana, the rubber guard girl, of course tried rubber guard but I was just so tired of being stuck in that position that she couldn't get it today. She mounted me somehow, kneed me in the face and my mouth started bleeding so the fight was stopped. I really wanted to work for a submission, oh well, next time.

Christina is the beast I trained with last year. She hasn't trained in months and still beats the crap out of me. My experiences at jiu jitsu have been a roller coaster of ups and downs. Today is a big DOWNNNNNnnnnnn.
