Deadlifts and milkshakes

No problemo. I messed around with the rubber guard for a while when I first started grappling. I think the basics of it are useful, but some of the moves are just too complicated and take too much effort to set up. I still use it all the time to set up the omoplata, but that's about it. I feel like it would be more useful to just drill basic guard attacks or regular high guard, but that's just my opinion.

Agree 100%. I trained RB for a good 6 months. What I took from it was an omaplata and how to work my high guard more effectively. It is so easily squashed it just isnt to useful to anyone who doesnt want to commit 100% to the system. If I get broken down and start getting the RG thrown on me, I just squat out of it or squash my opponent and work to pass over his leg thats on my ribs. I have never been submitted by way of rubber guard and I have rolled with guys who were crazy about it.

Good training WC, you looked strong today.

Thanks holmes, I learned from the best. ^^

BJJ

Joined a real school today. My instructor gave me a huge discount because I'm a college student so I'm prettty excited. Unlimited boxing/muay thai/bjj/wrestling classes for the whole semester for $300.

Tonight was a Basics no-gi class. We spent the first half hour doing shrimps, pummeling (sp?), triangles, passing the guard and front/back rolls.

Actual class was takedowns!! I felt pretty intimidated at first since we always start on our knees at the club at my school, and I actually still feel intimidated. We practiced pulling people down low and getting their ankles to get them on the ground. I had a hard time with it just because I think I was too tense.

Then we practiced getting them down on the ground, sprawling and then taking the back.

Rest of the class I rolled with every single person in the class and basically got tooled by everyone. Everyone trains a lot harder than what I'm used to and is less forgiving when it comes to tapping girls lol which I can appreciate. I rolled with my instructor and since it was the first time I started standing, I grabbed his neck and pulled him into guard. But he stood up and said, "That's not going to happen in my school. I want to see only takedowns from now on." Rolling with him was one of the most frightening things I have ever done.

I was thinking about competing in November but today was a rude awakening to how much I need to train. My instructor also said it's too soon...we'll just have to see.

EDIT: And I forgot to mention, when I was in the shower after training one of my toes was burning like hell. Looked at it and I have an enormous deep, slice in one of my toes. Dont know how it happened but its gonna be all sorts of fun trainiing with that now.

Are girls allowed to compete against guys in the tournament?

I don't know anything about competitions but I have seen youtube videos of fights with girl vs. guy.

BJJ

Today was our "competition team" training at the BJJ club. Two wrestlers joined and taught a basic set up for a double legged takedown. Then once we had that, we learned a guard pass when you swing the persons legs and then slide down to their ribs. A submission from that was to pin their arm down with your knee, windshield wiper your legs on to their arm, and then go for a kimura. Pretty cool submission.

I am still feeling pretty timid with the takedowns. I don't completely dedicate myself, especially not when rolling.

We rolled for a good hour with all of the students. Training has been especially hard because I haven't really had any partners that are 1) female 2) anyone near my weight/skill. It's been frustrating but I've been doing the best to my ability and training as hard as I can. I get tapped a lot from north-south position because I just don't know how to get out of it.

Legs are really sore so I went to a freezing cold, beautiful river for recovery in the mountains. It really didn't help much, but the rock scrambling to get to the river definitely got some blood moving. I also got stuck in between two boulders where the top was at the height of my shoulders. I had to hoist myself and basically do a dip and I did it easily, which I could NEVER do a few months ago. My shoulders feel strong and healthy and that reminded me why I lift.

Of course not! While BJJ is my top priority right now, I still plan on lifting M/W/F. It's going to be hard to do both on top of a tough schedule at school, but I will do it, no worries!

Notes: Deadlifted for the first time in months today. Going to start as light as possible which is really hard to have the patience for. It felt like air! Some guys from the BJJ club wanted to learn how to deadlift properly so Goon made me the demonstrator for perfect form. They had some serious form issues that made me cringe to watch since my back is so fucked but they were very eager and willing to learn!

A few friends woke me up at 9 this morning, kidnapped me and took me climbing. I actually got on some real rock and it was pretty awesome. Warmed up on an easy boulder problem, then climbed a V2 which is the hardest I've ever climbed. I don't think I'm necessarily any better technically but mentally just less afraid and timid.

BJJ in the evening
We had an AWESOME turnout at our club today. About 20 people, even some girls showed up that seem really interested ( I never get my hopes up though) We warmed up with hip movements, shrimps and hip escapes. Split the club into beginners and advanced and I ended up helping teaching some of the beginners. We went over breaking the guard, getting the back, what to do from side mount, yadda yadda all the same stuff. But I also learned some new stuff from the class and a video I had watched earlier in the day (Jiu Jitsu cookbook I think it was called) All this time I had been laying flat on my back when stuck in side mount...still such a newb.

I rolled with the same girl that I did last week, the one who only knows rubber guard. I kept my posture the whole time and she couldn't get me in it which was awesome. I swept her a few times which is something I've really been trying to work on. And I discovered my favorite submission that I always get people with! Armbar from mount!

Sweet! So you're at a new BJJ gym, who are the instructors, where, what affiliate blah blah blah?

I'm sure it's frustrating having a lack of training partners you size/strength etc, but just think how you'll TOOL girls your size and weight when you compete! You'll be so used to hanging with guys twice your size, piece o cake.

Edited for confidentiality =)
And you're right about training with guys, but its just so damn frustrating! Haha

Notes: I've been having a lot of hip and sciatica pain, so I'm keeping the squats and deads real light. I also notice when I squat, my body kind of comes out of the whole in a weird motion, my whole body shifts to the right with a lot of weight put on my right foot. Kind of like the videos Kaboom posted a long time ago, might be because of the hip injury?

Also, I had a dream last night that I competed in jiu jitsu and dominated! I think it's a sign I should stop being a pussy and register for the Nov comp.

Climbing in the a.m.
First time climbing outside with ropes. It was a 60-70 ft. wall, my forearms were so pumped by the end!

Attempted some chins and realized I can't pull my fat ass off the floor anymore, so I did some negatives. Kinda disappointing.

Urban had a problem with this, and so do I when working at max attempt sets.

I think it has a lot to do with squat form and not drilling it in correctly in the beginning.

Post a vid, you'd be surprised how much more deviation there is.

Doubt it.

Yeah, that's a good point about filming it. I keep meaning to bring my camera to the gym. Tomorrow when I squat, I shall get footage of it!

I had the squat problem too. Using a belt cured it.

That's interesting. I don't see myself getting a belt anytime soon, since I'm only squatting about 105 lol I have more of a hip injury anyways, not sure if it would be too helpful, but maybe!

BJJ (no-gi)

Hardest training session of my life. I went into the school today promising myself I would give it my all and not fuck around. I don't know if its because I am now a paying student or bc I've been thinking about competing, but I'm taking it more serious than ever.

Positioning drills - did some pummeling, worked with partner to get a better positon without actually taking the person down. My instructor gave me some pointers of foot position and different techinques that helped tremendously.

Learned a knee bar today, I actually caught on to this one fairly easy.
First submission was a knee bar from side control, second from side control.

5-minute rounds of rolling - 5 different oversized men
Stopped pulling guard and went solely for takedowns. Got one on a guy who was obviously fairly new. I got three different submissions on him. I took his back and choked him, armbared him and triangled him. Just when I got the confidence from that, I got smashed by the next guy, and the next guy, etc etc.

Overall, it was a hard session. It was brutally hot, I felt nauseous, but everytime I felt tired or sick...I'd get right back up and push myself harder. Pretty happy with how I performed.

Also, my instructor is receiving his black belt in a few weeks and there's going to be a Rob Kahn seminar. I guess I picked a good school!

BJJ (no-gi)

Went to the gym early and practiced break falling and triangles.
Only two guys showed up so at my request, we drilled arm drags to taking the back finishing with a rear naked choke. Think this is going to be my go-to move.

Rolled for 5 minutes with Goon. Still pretty beat up from yesterday's class but tried to use some of my new techniques instead of doing the same old shit.

BJJ (no-gi)
Todays class was for more advanced people and the first time I had been to a class that was anything but basics. The guys there were intimidating and relentless!

Typical warm-up:
Triangle drills
Escaping the guard
Pummeling

We learned a defense for when on the bottom of side control. Placing one forearm on the hips and under hooking the other arm. Then shrimping out and grabbing their close leg in with your far leg to get half guard with a lockdown.

Rolled with three different guys today.
Oversized man # 1: VERY aggressive. Got a double leg takedown on me and slammed me down on the ground and tapped me multiple times with kimuras and other unidentifiable submissions. I re-guarded him ONCE and the rest of the time, got my ass handed to me.

Man # 2: Same guy has been training at this gym and goes everyday (was nicknamed Raptor nails in my W1LD CH1LD log for his obscenely long toenails) and I feel sorry for him. He's not coordinated at all and not really progressing. I tapped with him a legit triangle and an armbar from mount. For a while, i thought triangles were ineffective and it was just bc I wasn't doing them right!

Man # 3: A wrestler. I'll leave it at that.

Went straight to the gym afterwards. Lost my wrist wraps, had to run back and get my camera...not a good day.

Here's a video of my 105 x 5 squat. I've been at this weight for months now because of my hip injury. And it seems that I am deviating to the right a little bit when I squat. Wondering if its because of the hip (the left is the bad one) and I'm overcompensating.
