I actually agree for the most part that Tom is not in the wrong for not wantin to continue. But the optics are just so horrible for combat sports.

compare it to Vitali Klitschko with his eye falling off freaking out when the doc stopped it in the corner when he fought Lennox, it's just not good.

Seems like Tom wanted to get the KO over Gane to prove himself as a great striker, doing something nobody else has been able to do, and did a half hearted takedown attempt to get him thinking.

Still a very close 4:30, but maybe Tom goes all in on his takedown attempts next time to play it safe so his eyes don't get raked again.

Gane didn't dominate but the 30-27 significant strike count is bullshit. A lot of the head strikes Tom landed on Gane that were counted clearly hit the guard.

Doubt this fight ends in two minutes. We shall see how Tom looks in round two/three in the rematch as we already know Gane can go five.

You could already see in that 1st round that Tom was walking him down more as the round went on. Gane started feeling the heat and as usual starts fouling his ass off when he wants to avoid the fight.

Ganes movement was something new to Tom, and now it wont be.

In terms of pure stand up i'm not sure theres a single HW in history who could outpoint him. Hes a top like 5% all time athlete for HW MMA too.

As an all round MMA fighter though? if you really are a genuine ATG HW you should be able to find a way to beat him. Jurys still out on Tom because he fought Gane at Ganes biggest strength while the fight lasted. We never got to see if he has the versatility and fight IQ to adjust and change the course of the fight.

Cyril Gane is a great tactician but a lousy strategist. He gave Tom almost 5 minutes in the ring with him, downloading his movement, his preferred counterstrikes, his relative power before committing a fight-ending foul that nullified the whole fight that he was probably winning at that point. Any element of surprise is gone, and his team may be realizing the patient approach may not be the best approach. You have to 'brawl a boxer' and I believe Tom will come out and simply mow down Cyril Gane in the rematch.
