I also said that France has a strong Muay Thai scene and good kickboxing culture altogether. With that said, in the 90s and early 2000s any HW muay Tai talent in France would have been in K-1 if they wanted to prove they're the best. LeBanner was the Muay Thai champion of France and was good in K-1 but definitely wasn't elite. I'd argue he was a lot better than Gane though.

How was LeBanner not elite? 2W vs Hoost, 2W vs Aerts, 2W vs Bernardo, 3W vs Hunt, W vs Bonjasky, Spong, Leko, Greco, Filho ..he might not have been the absolute best at any point but he could beat the very best and did so consistently. In my book, that's elite. LeBanner was K-1 royalty 100%.

I don't want to seriously compare fighters across organisations and eras but let me just say this: imo, Gane could have gone the kickboxing path and been a top fighter (I don't actually rate HW kickboxers very highly so it isn't some tall mountain in my mind) He is not a KB, MT flunkie - he simply chose MMA.

LeBanner was obviously very good but there's a reason for why 1) he never won a GP and 2) he was the only Frecnhman who reached such a level in k1 while multiple Dutch fighters became K1GP champions.

Hoost, Aerts, Schilt, Remy,Badr (didnt win GP but smashed Schilt shortly after Schilt won the GP) and even Branco Cikatic who trained out of a Hollland based gym. It's clear the KB level in Holland was higher than in France.

Gane obviously has potential to be a good kickboxer but he would have to put in thousands of hours of work to reach the level those guys reached. He hasn't put in the work, he hasnt trained as much and on such a high level. LeBanner did and he still didn't win a K1GP.

There are levels to this shit and that's no dishespect to Gane because I like him a lot.

Funny enough, Schaub talked about Cro Cop on the last Fight Companion. Said Cro Cop hit him so hard that he still to this day has trouble breathing through his nose. Even if you beat Cro Cop and avoid him sending you to the cemetery, you might still end up in the hospital

Schaub also said Cop was the strongest man he's ever tied up with. That's a big statement considering Shcaub has spent multiple training camps with pre USADA Carwin.

PS - your first question is irrelevant. Mirko didn’t even look good in his debut against Sanchez and he definitely didn’t look good by the time he fought Schaub and practically everywhere in between until he went back to the Orient.

Londt won Glory HW contender tournament and should have fought Verhoeven for the title, but Glory screwed him and pushed Hari trilogy instead.
Miller became boxing world title challenger to Anthony Joshua and Top 5 ranked HW boxer.

So, Cro Cop beat 3 world class fighters in their prime.
Next to Badr Hari, in the same tournament were Gerges, Samedov, Laschenko, regular Top 10 guys of last decade.
Rico Verhoeven lost to Laschenko in the qualifiers few months earlier and was eliminated.

So in fact it was a very strong tournament, and well worthy title. Not less, in analogy, than UFC titles in 2000's won by Arlovski, Sylvia, Couture, Mir...

And Mirko finally returned to ring fighting.
