Social Controversy over ESPN article on Jokic that some label racist

It's pretty obvious what's going on with these wh*te boys coming into a Black space like basketball and getting preferential treatment. Hilarious that people deny systemic NBA racism to this day, even after the widely known D*nald St*rling incident.

What’s wrong with acknowledging that there is a great white hype?

Article isn’t racist - just like half the stuff liberals call racist isn’t.

People who get worked up about this should lighten up. Let it go.

Not that big a deal.

Disagree... Just because Two Detriot Pistons said this about Larry Bird, doesn't make it true.

"This is the point Detroit Pistons forward Dennis Rodman was trying to make after a heartbreaking loss to the Larry Bird-led Boston Celtics during the 1987 playoffs. After the game, Rodman told reporters that Bird was “very overrated” and that he had won three straight MVP awards only “because he was white.”

“Larry Bird is a very, very good basketball player,” Rodman said. “But if he was Black, he’d be just another guy.”

Rodman’s teammate Isiah Thomas backed him up. “I think Larry is a very, very good basketball player. He’s an exceptional talent. But I have to agree with Rodman. If he were Black, he’d be just another good guy.”"

This is complete horseshit. Larry Bird wasn't just "another good guy". Fucking bullshit. He was the best player on the amazing Celtics teams.

The 80's Piston's were notorious for saying shit like this and being assholes. They embraced the villian role. Everyone knows what the Pistons did to young MJ. Isiah Thomas was a complete jackass to Jordan for years until Jordan finally swept the Pistons in the play-offs. Then walked off like a petulant child with time still on the clock.

Anyone with half a basketball brain puts Bird in the top 10 all time. And probably a top 2 or 3 shit talker and able to back it up.

All this clown had to do was say that Joker was extremely good... which he did say. And that he needs several more years of playing at that level to be considered a Top ever NBA player. Which is also true. He didn't need to bring racism into the discussion by saying media reporters are drooling over Joker because he's white.... lol.

I think people are just sick of ESPN including race into everything.

"Hype": : deception, put-on. : publicity. especially : promotional publicity of an extravagant or contrived kind.

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/hype#:~:text=: deception, put-on,an extravagant or contrived kind

By definition, they are stating the player in question isn't nearly as good as being claimed, and this is due to racism.

It would be similar to calling a black professor an "affirmative action hire".

The implication the person in question lacks the true qualifications of their peers and are only in the position due to racial considerations. That there are in fact others more deserving of the accolades, but who are simply the wrong "race".

People bitching about Jokic are stupid. There's no way a Serb could fill a "Great White Hope" role. Jokic is simply that good period, and his ethnicity if anything hurts him in terms of how he is viewed.

How is he hype when he won the MVP, Finals MVP, and the championship?

For someone who has watched the Nuggets for years, the stat padding accusation is the most absurd take.

Why?

1) Jokic had tons of games where he is a rebound or assist shy of a triple double, get he exits the game pretty early in the fourth because of lead size. It happens so often, the color commentators gave it a name - "The Sombor Double". Yoke could easily have another 20 or maybe 30 career triple doubles if he decides to play more minutes.

2 - When Yoke gets a triple double, his team wins an absurd amount of the time. At one point this year he eclipsed by a meaningful margin the consecutive team wins in a game you scored a triple double, I think it was 26 games in a row. I think overall Nuggets win around 90% of the games he gets a triple double because unlike Westbrook, Jokic gets his trip - dubs through efficient management of the team's offense, not through volume and usage rate. The hot take of criticizing a player for playing in a style that affords his team to win at that percentage was one of the worst analytical takes possible.

Then finally the playoffs was a nail in the coffin for all debate really and just goes to show the ugly side of wokism where you are essentially denying the reality of a situation and being blatantly racist by not having a fucking clue about what you're talking about while accusing others who do know what they are talking about as being racist. Pretty common tactic of woke shitheads.

Yep, and playing in Denver small market/ time zone. And not being someone who does flashy dunks.

The only time I watch ESPN is when they have rights to a football or baseball game. Pay no mind to the race grifters.

I wasn't surprised by the racist article that one of ESPN author.
Had posted earlier this week.

What i am surprised off is how ESPN is actually tolerating it.
Balkan Slavs and Slavs in general are actually minorities.

The fact that this went with their approval to pose the racist article.
There are many sites talking about this even MMA ones.

This is another reason i can not stand ESPN.

Controversy over ESPN article on Jokic that some label racist

So much copium

People on podcasts, in articles, in online comments. Lots and lots in comment sections. And saying there’s elements of the great white hype to these comments is not unreasonable.

Race is a huge part of how people talk about basketball - people openly talk about how the torch for the “greatest American white guy” is passed around year to year.

When you get defensive about this type of thing, makes me thing you for some quasi racist thoughts bubbling up

So random people you imagined? Show me a source with someone claiming he’s one of the top 5 best basketball players ever. I’m sure you can’t. I’m not being defensive by pointing out how much of a moron you are, certain people like you get their feathers ruffled when a white person has the audacity to be great at basketball.

Lol whaaaaaatttt

someone calls him the GOAT in these comments:

and that stuff is all over comments.

And I’m not getting my feathers rustled by a white person being good at basketball- I’m literally just saying it’s not racist to talk about how race influences Jokic praise and premature announcements of his all time greatbsss

Get real

Get real

It's an indefensible article for the precise reason it attempts to defend the same racism you're exhibiting in this thread. You are presumptively assigning a racist motive to those who praise him without any evidence his skin color is the basis for their praise. In other words, you assume that whites are racist by virtue of nothing other than being white. You can call his "Great White Hopeism" or "Great White Hypism"-- it doesn't make it any less racist.

Particularly so when you regard the statistical evidence I compiled above. I've followed advanced stats for over a quarter of a century in basketball, and I can never recall someone dominating the AIO advanced metrics across the board as much as Jokic has the past several years. Not even Lebron. For Kendrick Perkins to suggest his skin color is the primary reason he was being touted for a third straight MVP is absurd. Perhaps nobody has ever had as strong a candidacy backed by objective data rather than subjective opinion or analysis.

Furthermore, what top analyst has already deemed Jokic the GOAT center? A few fans online pre-emptively touting an athlete as the GOAT of his sport after winning a championship is as common as Monday. It happens in every sport, every year, and irrespective of skin color. Where is the author's evidence that Jokic has prematurely won undue esteem from pundits? Where is the ESPN roundtable poll ranking all-time centers with Jokic on top? Where is the Bill Simmons list? Where is the NBA official Greatest 50 list? No, instead, what is the only concrete piece of data the author cites? The fact sports media is ~82% white and male. None proving they are committing the crime he is alleging. Only the crime of being white.

He is imagining this offense, then crying racism at his imagined transgression. Ironically, he's the only racist in the room.
