Social Controversy over ESPN article on Jokic that some label racist

Great take.

It's an indefensible article for the precise reason it attempts to defend the same racism you're exhibiting in this thread. You are presumptively assigning a racist motive to those who praise him without any evidence his skin color is the basis for their praise. In other words, you assume that whites are racist by virtue of nothing other than being white. You can call his "Great White Hopeism" or "Great White Hypism"-- it doesn't make it any less racist.

Particularly so when you regard the statistical evidence I compiled above. I've followed advanced stats for over a quarter of a century in basketball, and I can never recall someone dominating the AIO advanced metrics across the board as much as Jokic has the past several years. Not even Lebron. For Kendrick Perkins to suggest his skin color is the primary reason he was being touted for a third straight MVP is absurd. Perhaps nobody has ever had as strong a candidacy backed by objective data rather than subjective opinion or analysis.

Furthermore, what top analyst has already deemed Jokic the GOAT center? A few fans online pre-emptively touting an athlete as the GOAT of his sport after winning a championship is as common as Monday. It happens in every sport, every year, and irrespective of skin color. Where is the author's evidence that Jokic has prematurely won undue esteem from pundits? Where is the ESPN roundtable poll ranking all-time centers with Jokic on top? Where is the Bill Simmons list? Where is the NBA official Greatest 50 list? No, instead, what is the only concrete piece of data the author cites? The fact sports media is ~82% white and male. None proving they are committing the crime he is alleging. Only the crime of being white.

He is imagining this offense, then crying racism at his imagined transgression. Ironically, he's the only racist in the room.
I knew he was going to get screwed out of the MVP this year because it would be his 3rd in a row. It was like Jordan not winning more because voters want to vote for someone new. One year Jordan lost to Malone which to this day is a travesty.

Save the GOAT talk for when he is done, but he is definitely the best player in the NBA right now.
Love watching him play.

Great take.

Fuckin stupid

Race is fundamental to how we understand ourselves and others and we don’t need proof that concepts like the great white hype are influential - the idea that we can’t explore this is bogus. Flat out.

And when people say Bird was only good for a white guy, it’s bull shit supported by racial thinking.

Get over it.

The proof is in the pudding. He usually gets the better of other elites, often making it look easy. Dude's quite simply the best in the game, right now. For some reason, it still triggers some people (most notably in the sports media) when the best hooper is of Euro descent. Like it's not allowed or something.

just admit you're a seething racist, bro.
it's very visible to everybody.

I wasn't surprised by the racist article that one of ESPN author.
Had posted earlier this week.

What i am surprised off is how ESPN is actually tolerating it.
Balkan Slavs and Slavs in general are actually minorities.

The fact that this went with their approval to pose the racist article.
There are many sites talking about this even MMA ones.

This is another reason i can not stand ESPN.

They are owned by Disney. They like to do weird white privileged woke stuff

I mean TBF - it was only Kendricks and the inevitable online trolls that were playing the race card on this.

The vast majority of black and white players and analysts were calling Kendricks a retard basically.

Magic Johnson and many other black players said Larry was amazing... including Kareem Abdul Jabbar and he didn't speak highly of many players.
Came in to mention this. I was under the impression that a lot of his contemporaries thought he was an amazing player and among the best to ever do it.

I don’t have an opinion on it myself as I am pretty sure that I’ve never seen a single game he played. I just remembered seeing videos of other players praising him

What do you mean Slavs are a minority? Like in the states?

I watched him from his first game until his last game sir, Im old though lol.

Anyone that says he isn't one of the best to do it is lying to themselves and everybody else.

I read an article which claimed that Slavs are minority due to the make up of other influences, cultures within the Slavs..
I will try to re find that article.

dont forget the goat

Carushow?

he has more skills than shaq and is harder to shut down but that doesn’t make him better

Eh... I don't know. Shaq was insane, but his shooting was shit. Joker is a point/center taking the ball up all the time. Best passing big man maybe ever. Slings threes at an incredible rate. Free throws are great. Rebounds like the worm... There is no weakness other than looking like jello.

Jocic grew up in a war torn country and it’s aftermath. The hunger and toughness that we don’t have over here where spoiled kids are getting Hummers and money in high school. The Serbs are a different breed.

Interesting angle. I mean, with all the talk about privilege, it's almost as though that circumstance for Jokic may be a more difficult circumstance to come from than most in the NBA. But the woke crowd who always decry on "punching down on people" certainly don't seem to mind punching down on Yoke.

lol... So true

Karl Malone's MVP was basically a career achievement award.

"Sorry for having to play against Jordan's Bulls and losing year after year... So here's a consolation MVP award"

The Jazz couldn't even capitalize when Jordan took two years off and Hakeem decided dominate the league and Big Shot Bob was born... lol

I was in Utah back then... so much heartbreak. But I had to watch the very underated 80's Nuggets team get their asses handed to the by the Lakers growing up. That Nuggets team was very good.. but damn... The Lakers would just run through them. Loved listening to those games on the radio when I was in bed. Haha... such a different time then.

That said... Kendrick Perkins is a salty bitch and shouldn't be on TV.

Loved watching Stockton play. Sometimes I think he could have scored more, but that was not who he was. He had a little grit to him which I liked. The only thing I hated about him was those nut hugger shorts he wore.
Malone has gone from overrated to now being shit on, which I dont think is fair.
He was a good rebounder, ran the floor well, played hard and was a scorer. He is rightfully in the top 50 of all time. He just never won a title and sometimes the media like to hold that against you. Marino is a top 5 QB, but his name always get left off because he never won a Super Bowl.
Sports media has gone the way of Cable News Channels. Hot takes gets ratings. It made Skip Bayless a shit load of money. Perkins has some shitty takes and I am not sure if he is doing it for click bait or just has shitty takes. Could be a little of both.
