Do you still maintain DeSantis and Red States DID NOT take their guidance from the Trump admin when they put in place their shut downs, and on vaccines and masks?

Do not try and change the topic to later stages of the pandemic and address the point YOU MADE. Do you maintain i was wrong and that DeSantis and Red States DID NOT get that guidance from the Trump Admin on shut downs, vaccines and masks.

I guess my point is that I think you're being a little dramatic about how impactful abolishing the electoral college would be when we've had similar serious reforms to the constitutional order. The current republic is basically unrecognizable when compared to what the Founding Fathers had ironed out by the end of the 18th century. That's not to say that abolishing the electoral college is necessarily good or bad. Personally I would happy with reforming it so all states award their electors proportionately rather than on a winner takes all basis because it kills voter enthusiasm from the opposition party in states that lean heavily one way or the other. That and uncapping the House of Representatives of course but that's a whole other conversation.

Also, again, most rural voters are in California. They have no impact on the EC (and they would have an impact on a national popular vote). The votes that matter most with our stupid system are the ones in divided states with big populations. Those change and are somewhat random. California used to be the most important swing state. Later it was Florida. Now it's Pennsylvania. There's no logic to it, and it's not something anyone would defend on principal. It's just defended on partisan grounds (though even that can change).

Now, today’s conservatism as it is in the US is definitely a threat to democracy. But I don’t think conservatism has to b by definition. Usually it’s just a bunch of stuffy rich people fighting change because change means they might be slightly less wealthy. It doesn’t always have to involve ending democracy to install a fascist dictatorship.

The problem is that conservatism as defined by Kirk or Burke is just one flavor of rightism, and it's not been a popular one for a while. But colloquially, we call the right in America and the Conservative movement "conservative." It’s confusing. You also have a lot of Americans who think of "liberal" as just meaning "on the left" and will refer to illiberal leftists as being extremely liberal. It'll drive you mad if you're a stickler.
