I used to collect a bunch of comics aa kid. I just restarted checking out some series. Pirating is good for some people. I would have paid close to 300 bucks for comics I read digitally.

I collected from 1987 to 1998 and then in 2010 I started flipping comics and made tens of thousands of dollars. Probably $40,000 profit in the last 5 years. I remember I bought 40 copies of Peter Panzerfaust 1 (everyone on ebay at the time) for about 20 dollars a piece and then 3 months later they were worth $100 a piece. I think I personally had some role in the price increase because I definitely made it harder to find copies on ebay! I sold a few graded 9.8 for $300.
Same with the Gaurdians of the Galaxy books. In 2010 right when it was announced they were making the movie I bought 20 copies of Marvel Preview 4. I bought at least 20 copies of Strange Tales 180.

Comics cost $1.06 when I was really into them in the early 90's. Was shocked they were $3, 4 and 5 10 years later for glossier paper and cardboard stock covers. The ads were getting ridiculous, in an issue of Batman, there were only two consecutive pages of content, rest of it was a page of content then a page of ad.

Never sold many comics, got $11 for Jim Lee X-Men # 1 and $20 for first appearance of Gambit. Now I just pick up graphic novels for half off or issues for a quarter at cons.

A little cheaper.

There are half a dozen titles I buy every week on an ongoing basis or know I'm going to purchase. This is the equivalent of what my pull list would be at a brick and mortar comic book shot.

I pirate a bunch that I'm iffy about. Probably another half dozen each week. If I really like it, I'll buy it. Otherwise, they get deleted. In my reckoning, this is the equivalent of flipping/browsing through comics at the shop, which is a part of the experience you miss online - those previews don't really do it IMO. The comic book shop I used to work at nearly 20 years ago was very collector oriented, so we'd bag comics as soon as they come in. For the popular titles, we'd leave one unbagged out on the rack as the browser and we'd always open up the baggies for people who were interested in looking at some new or indy title at the counter.

I pretty much do the same for music, too. Listen/read before you buy, like you would at a brick and mortar store.

I briefly was collecting comics back in the early 90's when I had a friend that owned a shop. I got 20% off. I stopped buying at the end of some big crossover thing between the X-men comics. The stories conclusion cost something like $8. I didn't buy it and never bought another one. $8 for a comic? Fuck that.

That was definitely a ransom they were trying to get you to pay.
